Tribe sues NCAA to let school use name

The Spirit Lake tribe Tuesday sued the NCAA for blocking its attempt to let the University of North Dakota use the sports nickname Fighting Sioux.

Tribal attorney Reed Soderstrom said the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court challenges the NCAA's policy banning the use of Native American names and imagery by collegiate athletic teams.

He said the suit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association was brought on behalf of more than 1,004 members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe "in direct response to their attempt to take away and prevent the North Dakota Sioux Indians from giving their name forever to the University of North Dakota" despite a tribal vote in 2009 and a "sacred and religious spiritual ceremony" by tribal leaders in 1969 that granted "perpetual use" of the name to the school.

"However, the NCAA has unilaterally decided that the name 'Fighting Sioux' is derogatory to the very people who feel honored by the name -- the North Dakota Sioux tribes," Soderstrom said in a statement posted on the tribe's Web site. "The NCAA has declared, without input from the Dakota Sioux, that UND will be prevented from hosting any post-season sporting events; and is encouraging other universities to boycott UND if the university does not remove the name 'Fighting Sioux' and the accompanying logo honoring the traditions and customs of the proud Dakota Sioux people.

PC is so crazy. NCAA tells Native Americans...”Don’t you know that this name is racist to you?” Native American: “No, it’s not”. NCAA: “You stupid, racist person!”

I have ALWAYS said that such a name is an honor to a proud and brave people. The morons running the NCAA have better things to do than to be enforcing misguided, unwanted politcal correctness. It is the NCAA that is disrespecting the Sioux people.

Speaking of Political Cowardice, what sort of news organization goes with the headline “Tribe Sues” instead of “Sioux Sues”?

This was a test case to see if the NCAA had the horsepower to go after the heavyweights. Florida State Seminoles, Notre Dame Fighting Irish & Illinois Fighting Illini. My guess is the next move was to get ND & Illinois to drop the “fighting” part. The really tough nut would have been Florida State.

Why not go after Notre Dame first?

The NCAA is based in INDIANapois, INDIANa. Maybe they need to move to another city that doesn’t use an INDIAN name.

My husband’s cousin married a wonderful man who is Cherokee. We tease him horribly if he wears his Washington Redskins baseball hat or sweatshirt. We do jokingly tell him that he is racist toward Native Americans. All in good, sarcastic family fun but sort of the same thing.

“.. naming something after someone was a sign of respect”.

It was and it is... however, this “view” has been changed. Teams named themselves after a group of “warriors” or people who were athletic and strong. Whatever group embodied a spirit of winning and not faltering against pressure. However, many schools are now naming athletic groups with silly animal names or such. Our local Middle School changed their mascot name from Raiders (OMG.. they were like pirates and they had knives and such) to the Bulldogs (that have extra folds of skin). Are you afraid of a Bulldog? Don’t you just quiver and get weak kneed at the thought of one?!! LOL!!!
