Cain said “I can’t give you a definitive answer on that until we consult with our legal attorneys”

Is there any other kind - of attorney, that is?
Fashion attorneys? Dental attorneys? Zoological attorneys? Biblical attorneys?

Yes there are other types of attorneys. If you are given power of attorney over a person's healthcare decisions, you are an attorney (attorney-in-fact) but you are not an attorney-at-law.

This is not a gaffe by Cain even if it might look like one.

Actually, an attorney is, particularly in England and Wales, an agent appointed to act on behalf of a person (an attorney-in-fact). An attorney-at-law is a more formal term for lawyer.

The reason I know this is that an old associate (and stickler for word usage) used to correct me when I used the term "attorney" (by reminding me needlessly that one should say "lawyer").

Well, one could always consult with attorneys who are illegally in the country, making them illegal attorneys. Or those who have had their law licenses "suspended", like MooseShell.
