An alleged plot to attack federal and state officials by suspected members of a fringe north Georgia militia group was inspired by an online anti-government novel, authorities said.

Court documents state that 73-year-old Frederick Thomas, a suspected member of the group, told others that he intended to model their actions on the online novel "Absolved," which involves small groups of citizens attacking U.S. officials.

Obviously we need more common-sense ricin control laws.

Maybe. I trust nothing the federal govt says or does. They have done too much anti citizen mischief in the past, much of it recent. I suspect that as we get closer to the election the feds will be arresting more white citizens on charges of this sort.

I agree that he is innocent until proven guilty.

I also like much of what Mr. Cain proposes. However (you knew that was coming) - the way he has managed this mess reflects a total lack of planning and preparation.

Cain and his advisers admit they knew of this 10 days before it broke. Instead of doing virtually nothing - even a political novice would know that when the story broke, they would be asked to respond.

Not only was his response weak...but it changed from day to day...as he “remembered” things.

I am not throwing Herman out - merely suggesting that this response was not well thought out and was certainly not one we would expect of someone with Presidential stature...someone that had 10 days to prepare a consistent, blunt and on the mark response.

In my opinion, it will be the response, not the charge, that damages his campaign and stature.

This sounds really thin. Everybody up in the mountains hates the govt. What else is new. They are also armed up and ticked off. They are probably all sitting around the coffee shop talking about blowing up a building. Thats just normal up there.

“Everybody up in the mountains hates the govt. “

Perhaps you may wish to expand the territory wherein the government is not well thought of.

As one man so well put it, “I took an oath to preserve and protect the Constitution. It is the folks in some government offices I am afraid of.”

As for the ricin bit, the formula for that is available online.

A far more effective weapon against over-reaching government officials is the vote. After all, Jefferson was right about the “informed electorate being the only safe repository of power”.

Speaking of developing an informed electorate, how many people have YOU introduced to Free Republic this week?

A shot of Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, et al - and I would be making as much sense as an OWS “spokesperson”.

Nice idea, though.

PS I was dropping a broad hint to all because I have discovered that answering a Liberal’s argument may convince them of one thing (note the use of “may”), but introducing them to Free republic tends to cause longer lasting changes.

Besides, it is fun listening to them hyperventilate when they first open the FR site.

Thankfully I only know two libs and they would never lower themselves to look at FR. I try to just make sure all my conservative buddies get turned on to it.
