OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland school officials say about 360 teachers didn't show up for work, as thousands of people joined anti-Wall Street protests throughout the city.

Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint says roughly 18 percent of the district's 2,000 teachers were absent, as compared to the 1-percent rate on a typical Wednesday.

Several teachers' unions have expressed support for the Occupy Oakland movement, which made international headlines after an Iraq War veteran participating in the demonstrations was injured in last week's clashes between protestors and police.

When Oakland teachers don’t show up in the classroom, does it really matter? I mean, c’mon.

Most teachers are children, looking for any reason to skip class. They love it. And the tax payers have to pay for it. Oakland, New York, Los Angeles, San Fran.....let them up go to hell. They are getting what they deserve.

Why would an Iraq war Vet be caught dead at one of these. Why would an America hater join the military? These people hate their way of life here? Go live in any other part of the world for a few years, you’ll be missing America, stupid idiot dumbass moron clowns.

Everyone of them should be fired, but you gotta laugh at the 18% figure. This is Oakland we are talking about, and only 18% didn’t show up? This is not a good percentage given how over-the-top socialists/marxist that area is.

I thank the Lord that I was not born in Oakland, that I don’t live there, and most of all that my children did not have to go to school there.

The businesses they shutter are the same ones who pay sales taxes, property taxes, business licenses, business fees and corporate or personal income taxes to the state and county that pays their salaries, healthcare and lifetime pensions with those sweet COLA increases every year.

They also hire people who in turn, pay those taxes.

The entire thing is Liberal insanity, which is redundant.

Wow, could there possibly be any connection between this and how crappy CA public schools are? Nah..... nothing to see here. Radical liberals teaching our kids makes me sick - but hey, I’ll just keep quietly paying my property taxes while as a business owner I’m demonized by these leftist freaks as being one of “the rich”.

Johnny can’t read, but he can sure protest (although he’ll need some spelling help with the protest sign).

We sold our home in Oakland back in 2009. I hate the place with a white hot passion...crooked polticians, unions, miles of welfare-laden ghettos, sanctuary city with illegals everywhere, drugs, gangs, violence...

It is one giant crackhouse with a few nice areas in the hills...

They are just taking a personal day. I am sure their contract gives them at least 5 personal days. If they have used their personal days, then they are taking a training day. The protests provide a tremendous opportunity to enhance their conceptual Marxist background with actual experiences in riots, law enforcement taunting, marching, union solidarity (especially old union songs), fist waving, arrest procedures, and public urination (defecation also for the really bold).

Used to play hockey at the Oakland Ice back in the 90’s.

Very interesting street denizens would come by to bum an
extra after game beer from our ice chest (outside in the parking lot - its why they’re called beer leagues!).

Amusing, but then no one really caused us any problems.

Not a place to break down and get stranded in ... pretty much that way anywhere along I880 in the East Bay.
