The day after playing in a Minneapolis concert, Cory Smoot - also known as Flattus Maximus, the guitarist for metal band GWAR - was found dead on the band's tour bus Thursday.

GWAR frontman Dave Brockie released a statement Thursday to Brooklyn, N.Y.-based MetalSucks, an online site featuring posts on heavy metal music.

"Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans," Brockie said, adding that a full statement would be released in "the next day or so."

The band played at First Avenue on Wednesday. They were crossing into Canada on Thursday and were due to perform Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

“Believe it or not, the metal community is very much against drug use. There are obviously outliers, but in general, the idea of metal is that it gets you moving and is a replacement for drugs.”

This metalhead agrees! (Yes, I listen to heavy metal while I clean the house. Nothing gets me moving better. It also helps me overcome the fear when I have to tackle the kids’ bathroom.)

The druggies seem to listen to some weird, mellow crap.

“Reminds me of how sad I was when I learned that John Entwistle was found dead”

Yep the Ox has been missed. Amazing Bass player. Best evidence...listen to “Dreaming from the Waist” live version from the “Who by Numbers” Reissue/Remastered issue. Simply amazing performance, Thunder Fingers indeed.

My only problem with Rammstein is that it’s all in German. I’ve jammed to them on more than one occasion, and while I’ve never seen them in concert, I heard it is a spectacle to behold!

as far as GWAR is concerned, they were very tongue in cheek.
They are sort of the “WWE” of the metal world.

I’m a conservative and I love hard rock and metal.
I am a fan of King Diamond as well as other bands/musicians that probably don’t sit well with a lot of other conservatives, but hey, my choice!

Throw “Boris the Spider” into that one as well. Best bass intro ever.

Kids today aren’t drinking and smoking dope anymore. They’re eating Xanax and Hydrocodone and zoning out to crap like Dashboard Confessional or Coheed and Cambria.

Give me Killswitch Engage, Godsmack, KoRn, Nonpoint, Sevendust, or Powerman 5000 ANY DAY, ANY WAY. I’d rather thrash around a mosh pit and get a little bruised and beaten than pop and pill and become a pile of mush.

Despite having my nose broken on more than one occasion in a mosh pit, I’ve found that there’s an unspoken camaraderie in the pit. Someone falls, you pick them up. Someone gets hurt, you let them out of the pit. You go to some of these new age rock or punk concerts, and you’ve got assholes with nails in their boots and full on brawls in the middle of the crowds.

Metal is organized chaos.

I’ve actually picked up a bit of German from Rammstein. Of course, what I’ve learned won’t get me too far. for example, Ich tu dir weh - I hurt you ;-)

Saw them at MSG and at the Izod in New Jersey. Same show, but I wish I could see them again. They really do an unbelievable stage show. At the Garden, there were 11 semi’s parked outside to carry all their stuff.

One thing I really like about Rammstein is their industrial edge. Reminds me of old school Gravity Kills.

Disposing of drugs before the border crossing?

“I played drums in Metal bands for 20 years staring in 1980. We were all big Reagan supporters.”

Same here. The only libs were some of the bass players
because they felt entitled to a lead solo. Bass players,
sometimes you gotta have em.

Korn is my favorite band.

I also like Marilyn Manson...

Never got into Manson. His music was a little too slow for me. Korn’s earlier music was amazing. They softened a bit over the years, I think. Perhaps Davis finally got over his abusive father issues?

ANY rock/metal band that uses classical instrumentation gets at least a one-time listen by me.

I LOVE Apocalyptica. Reminds me of a heavy metal TSO (Trans-Siberian Orchestra).

I think alternative instrumentation (brass, strings) takes hard rock/metal to the next level! I’m also a HUGE fan of female metal vocalists like Morgan Lander with Kittie. Something about a woman’s voice gives me goosebumps.

And then there’s Amy Lee from Evanescence *drools*
