As if Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano didn’t have enough trouble with questions about Operation Fast and Furious, pressure is building on Capitol Hill for Holder to step down, while Sen. Charles Grassley is now asking some probing questions of Napolitano about “sanctuary cities.”
Grassley sent a letter to Napolitano Wednesday.
Seattle is a “sanctuary city,” where police are not allowed to quickly ascertain someone’s immigration status. The King County Sheriff’s Department doesn’t ask that question, either, but actually likes it that way so that potential crime witnesses do not fear being quizzed about their status. Sgt. John Urquhart told this column that in the event a suspect is arrested and there is a question about the individual’s status, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – the agency that lost Jaime Zapata to a daylight ambush in northern Mexico this past February where a gun from Fort Worth was recovered at the crime scene – may be called in.
The situation should remind gun rights activists of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms campaign of a few years ago dubbed “Border Control, Not Gun Control.” CCRKBA, prompted by an expose in Gun Week under this reporter’s byline that detailed how a large percentage of this country’s prison population consists of illegal aliens, had tens of thousands of bumper stickers with the “Border Control, Not Gun Control” message, in either English or Spanish. They were a hot item at gun shows and pro-gun events.
In the alphabet soup in which ICE, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) swim, there currently seems to be a lot of gray area.
