Green candidate for mayor based in Occupy Tucson tent

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) - There is no bank of telephones at Mary DeCamp's campaign headquarters, no volunteers eager to bring her message to the masses.

The Green Party candidate for mayor of Tucson, who is days away from losing her home to foreclosure, is flanked by fellow Occupy Tucson activists as she directs her long shot bid for public office from a borrowed tent in a local park.

"November 10th is my eviction date," the aptly named candidate said cheerfully on Friday, while unpacking signs after police had pushed Occupy Tucson campers from one park to another a night earlier.

DeCamp could have saved her house, she said, and could have taken handouts from friends and family to keep her mortgage current. But she said she gave up after months of phone calls from the bank hounding her about late payments as she fell further behind.

"I just shut down," she said.

Instead, she chose to go it alone and walk away from the home she bought for $172,000 at the height of the real estate boom, a home now worth far less than the amount she borrowed.

Although she acknowledges she has little real chance of winning election, DeCamp prides herself as a politician who can give voice to a constituency that lacks one. She ran for City Council two years ago and lost.

While local Republicans and Democrats bicker over downtown redevelopment and budget woes in the southeastern Arizona city, she said she focuses on broader issues.

"I'm advancing a much-needed message that isn't being advanced by the two major parties," she said. "I think globally and act locally."

The more interesting thing in Tucson will be the upcoming Tour de Tucson bike race, the largest (15,000 riders) road race in the country.

Lots of $$ into the city coffers and the occupiers are using the start/finish location.

http://activerain.com/blogsview/2585443/occupy-tucson-vs-el-tour-de-tucson-

When the city council realizes that a lot of out-of-town bikers will just bring a tent instead of getting a motel room and paying “bed tax” and sales tax, their view on the occupiers might change...:^)

This event and the Gem Show are probably the two biggest moneymakers for the city.

If she wins is she going to sleep in her office?

I have a neighbor down the road who bought her house for over 1M during the bubble, weeks before it burst. It’s an ordinary, ho-hum 2 bdrm 2 bath one story, really worth more like about $350K, except that it has a little view of the ocean. She’s on a less-than quarter acre with very little landscape.

My property is 33 acres. Because I’m under prop. 13, my property taxes taxes are miniscule compared to hers. She pays over $100K a year. Incredible. Good thing she’s a nasty lesbian lawyer, or I’d feel sorry for her.

I bet the Grijalva family in total supports her.

SandRat — We were downtown last Sunday for church....

Afterwards went by to see the squatters. It’s even worse in person than on tv... My husband was driving and we didn’t get out, but there were bodies sprawled out all over three parks, the epitome of “dirty hippies.”

Thank goodness I didn’t see any in the park we always used for the tea parties... don’t want their diseases there.

Even though my brother and I tried to warn her, my youngest sister bought a nearly-half million dollar tiny shack in LA. I’d put the value at perhaps $150K, it does include some hilly land but... And right before the bubble burst.

She’s the token family lib (though lately turning more conservative), but the worst is that she brought my parents down with her. None of them has any money, my parents are retired and used to always be smart with their money. The whole thing makes me ill. They’re still justifying how they took out a second mortgage on their home (here in AZ) to help her out. All the rest of us can hope is that she eventually can pay them back (she’s just in her early 30s).

Those who are defiling public lands need some lengthy time on an old fashioned chain-gang cleaning up the mess they've created.

They can go clean up the entire area between downtown Tucson and the Mexican border.... I never saw one ounce of trash at a tea party — sometimes I’d help pick up stuff someone forgot, but that’s about it.

Ewww, lol, I did!

Seriously, I didn’t think it would be *that* bad, and that we might even get out and walk around (nice day, fun to be downtown, etc.). Ummmm, no, it would have been like being with rats. I used to camp and backpack TONS and even after 10 days out, never came close to looking that disgusting.

Well, they ARE libs, so they were 60% of the way to disgusting on day 1. They had a headstart. About as grungy as I ever get camping is to let the facial hair grow free.
