Someone reposting this the day after Guy Fawkes Day (Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. . .), it seems an opportune time to observe as I have before that the English speaking peoples are an odd lot: we all let off fireworks in commemoration of acts of treason against the British Crown.

In the States we commemorate one which was successful, in Commonwealth realms, they commemorate one which was unsuccessful.

Ah, but there is an important difference. July 4th, when all is said and done, celebrates the success of a rebellion. November 5th however, celebrates the crushing of one.
