WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters opposed to a new oil pipeline from Canada to the United States circled the White House complex on Sunday to press President Barack Obama to reject the project on environmental grounds.

Opponents to TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport crude produced from oil sands, have dogged the president for months, arguing against the carbon-spewing process of extracting oil from the sands.

On Sunday thousands of men and women, many of them wearing orange vests with "Stop the pipeline" printed on them, lined up around the White House grounds, which include the presidential mansion, the Treasury department and a sprawling executive office building.

Carrying signs that matched Obama's campaign colors of blue and red, some protesters chanted "Hey Obama, we don't want no climate drama" and "Stop the pipeline, yes we can," copying phrases connected to Obama's successful 2008 election effort.

The pipeline controversy threatens to loom over the 2012 presidential race. Obama faces political pitfalls whether his administration approves or rejects the project.

A decision in favor would support Obama's goal of creating jobs and diversifying U.S. energy sources, but it would alienate core Democratic supporters who are already disappointed by his progress in fighting climate change.

Occupy the Oval Office. It’s public property after all. I am sure they won’t mind you flea bitten mongrels crapping in the floor for the next few weeks.

This smells funny. The WH compound is simply too big to be “surrounded” by a handfull of protesters. Need to see overhead pics.

Simple solution, take away their drivers license's(if they have any), Confiscate their cars, only allow them to travel of Donkeys. Remove all possessions that have any plastic, or use any form of electronics.

Give them a spanking & send them home(via donkey).

Send those Portland lice-infested protestors to occupy the Oval Office - what goes around, comes around.

If it speaks in groupspeak and stinks, it belongs to Obama.

The fact that they were being allowed to protest at all means that they had the blessings of the boy king.

Obama was not at the White House when the protest took place. As he often does on the weekends, the president was playing golf.

40 hour work week, not bad

As others have noted, Obama has no say over the Trans-Canadian pipeline. It's the Canadians' oil, they want to sell it, and if the US won't buy it they'll be happy to point the pipe into the hold of a Chinese tanker and have it sail away.

That will, of course, increase the amount of oil that the US will need to import by tanker, so the "environmentalists" will have eliminated extremely safe pipeline transportation of oil in return for a string of tankers leaving Canada, while others are coming here. This lack of intelligence is typical of "environmentalists," who show more evidence every day that they do their 'thinking' with their butts.

Good. I love it when the demons turn on Satan. But, what you wanna bet that even if his decision does disappoint them, they'll still vote for him in 2012. Any takers?
