The amount of redundancy in our “intelligence” gathering entities is absolutely insane. But let’s not make any cuts there....
In what he described as the most sensitive of the potential cuts facing an all-volunteer force, Mr. Panetta said the Pentagon was considering raising fees for the militarys health insurance program, Tricare. Today, military retirees and families, who are guaranteed Tricare for life, pay only $460 a year in fees far below what they would pay if they worked for a private employer although a modest increase for new enrollees began last month.
The White House and Pentagon have made clear that Tricare fee increases would be phased in over a few years and would affect current retirees and troops serving today when they retire. Health care costs for the Pentagon, the nations largest employer, total $50 billion a year, or about a tenth of its base budget. Ten years ago, health care cost the Pentagon $19 billion, equal to about $25 billion in todays dollars.
This will have a very adverse affect on our retirement. It is not fair to compare the military to the private sector. The military recieves more in benefits because they take more risks, make less money and make more sacrifices than most in the private sector. There may very well be protests in DC that make the OCW crowd look like girl scouts.
I believe they are going to protect most military benefits using them as an excuse to raise taxes.
Good points
“....we need soldiers more than we need bureacrats....”
The left/Liberals always see Defense as a financial affront for their pet social programs. They take their cue from European Socialists who built their programs on the backs of American taxpayers that provided the military might/prowess for their national defense....
If only we didn’t have all that military we’d be as great as Europe..../s
