Tokyo Metropolitan Govt to Check Food for Radiation
Tokyo, Nov. 7 (Jiji Press)--The Tokyo metropolitan government said Monday it will monitor levels of radioactive substances in food on store shelves starting Tuesday.
About 500 items will be monitored, including vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs and dairy products. Each week, the metropolitan government will buy 20-30 products randomly to measure radiation levels using dosimeters.
Products with radioactive cesium levels exceeding 50 becquerels per kilogram will be subject to detailed examinations.
If products are found with more than 500 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram, the provisional limit under the food sanitation law, they will be subject to suspension of sales or recalls.
The move is designed to help ease citizens' concerns about radiation-tainted food. It already monitors radiation levels of agricultural produce before shipment as well as beef in the capital's meat market.
