Despite recent layoffs, teachers still have greater job security than workers in private businesses. While employment in education declined by 2.9% between September 2008 and July 2011, according to BLS data, overall private-sector employment declined by 4.4%.

Moreover, from 2005 through 2010 the unemployment rate for public school teachers averaged 2.1%, versus 4.1% for private school teachers and 3.8% for occupations that some consider comparable, such as computer programmers and insurance underwriters.

"Despite what some among us would like to believe it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. It is not because we care about children and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power."

"And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year, because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees."

I was a teacher for 30 years and I never thought I was underpaid. My day was short and the benefits were plenty. I was able to go to school with my children and they came home with me in the afternoon. Now that I know that I never paid anything into my retirement fund, I am even more sure that I received a fair wage.

good article.

i worked during college in an admissions office and noticed that the education sat’s and gre’s were comparatively low.

here, the authors say below the 40th percentile.

A majority of the teachers must support and promote the NEA and its policies ( abortion is one) otherwise we wouldn't have the NEA and what it stands for.

So....Remember that.... **More** than half. These are the people teaching the next generation of voters.

I am now at the point that I will not have a government school teacher for a friend. I really don't want people in my life who would **willingly** train for and seek a job that does three things:

** forces a child into a godlessly secular environment against their will and that of their parents. How does an immature **child** negotiate the task of thinking and reasoning godlessly just to cooperate in the secular classroom?

** is likely to cause a child to be comfortable with socialism. Just by attending children learn that the government has enormous power to force his neighbor to pay for, and to force him to use, this socialist tution-free service. Well...If a child can get free school from the government, why not lots of socialist goodies? Franklin D. Roosevelt wasn't an accident. He was the result of one to three generations of voters learning to be comfortable with socialism in their socialist tuition-free schools.

** would force taxpayers ( under the threat of police action) to fund the abomination above.

Finally....Any conservative and/or Christian teacher who thinks they can sneak in a few conservative or Judeo Christian principles, have you considered the following?

1) You may be teaching children that conservatives and Christians are sneaky.

2) When did it become a conservative principle to force your political and religious philosophy on children who are in this prison-like environment under compulsion?

I've been hammered on other threads ( even by conservatives) for being so broadly condemning of government owned socialist schooling and of the people who run them. So?....If anyone knows of a government run and owned K-12 school that isn't socialist funded, isn't compulsory for those who can not find or fund private or home schooling, isn't funded through compulsion, and isn't godlessly secular in its worldview, I would be very interested in seeing a link.
