The press and politicos have never been that shy to begin with when it comes to dirty tricks.. it’s been going on for hundreds of years.. and will , as long as the presses are free, so to speak.
I don’t think the founders would have been surprised about political dirty tricks.
The disappointing factor would be how one sided the press is.

Press has never been very nice to the people they didn’t like. Back in those days it was a partisan press - nowadays the partisan press likes to make a pretense of objectivity - but it is only pretense.
