This weekend the Spanish government ordered residents on El Hierro Island in the Canary Islands to abandon their homes.

The reason? A big volcano, just 70 meters from the surface of the water.

Increased volcanic and seismic activity has forced residents out. Since July the volcano has spewed out gas, lava and sulfur into the ocean turning the ocean into a volcanic jacuzzi.

Have a look at some more photos of the eruption.

I’m sure we’ll soon be hearing about all the hydro-fracking going on on and around the Canary Islands.

This eruption will kill a lot of fish and absolutely ruin the aquatic ecosystem near that part of the Canary Islands - we can’t blame President Bush for this one, so what’s to be done? Blame the Italians?

Yeah, but is this the one that’s going to send a big tsunami to my house?

You’ll be OK if you live at least 50 miles inland.

There's always global warming.

"This eruption will kill a lot of fish and absolutely ruin the aquatic ecosystem"

What makes the occurrence ruination and not natural change?

Why not?

What has he done to help, eh?

Yeah well, I’m about 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. :)

The east coast gets maybe a one hour warning. I recall seeing a show about a volcano and if it blew the east coast could be screwed. Is this the one?

Eastern U.S. would have about 4 hours warning for a tsunami generated in the eastern Atlantic. Tsunamis travel ~500mph.

The only quick way for Hampton Roads residents to gain altitude is I64W which will be a complete gridlock. Most of this area is well below 100ft elevation and it is estimated that a 100ft tsunami is not out of the question, given a slide into the ocean of this magnitude.
