AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end
CBS Sports ^ | November 9, 2011

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

Titans and cretins, huh? Considering Paterno put his hands in his pockets and looked the other way for at least 9 years, I’d say it’s damn difficult to distinguish between the two at this point.

Wondering if the DA just allowed Paterno to wiggle-out of his culpability here by failing to closely question McCreary & Paterno on the discrepancy.

My thoughts. There is a lot of McQueary and Paterno testimony that is NOT in the report. Not needed for the indictments as McQueary spoke directly with Curley and Schultz.

Paterno agreed to testify. They only good his testimony would have is if he was a party to conversations where Curley and Schultz were told it was a rape.

Thats what did it for me. I read that whole, miserable grand jury indictment. A 28 y/o athelete comes upon an old guy raping a 10 y/o boy and a). does not physically stop it and kick the old guys ass, and b) doesn’t step outside and call 911. there are no other possible human choices! But this guy, he proceeds cautiously talk to dad, arrange some meetings, think about how it will ‘affect’ everyone. Cult-like response. You, Mr. McQueary, are a failure as a fellow human being.

I wonder what Rene Portland thinks about all this.....

Portland got railroaded by the Gay-friendly power stucture at PSU. Now this happens involving football program?! I think people involved in PSU athletics may have been turning a blind-eye toward homosexual activity in general after Portland's public lynching. But this is child-abuse and therefore a whole other ballgame.

What was on Gricar's hard drive that he wanted to destroy? Why did Gricar 'disappear'?

My theory is that Gricar was paid-off by PSU people to scrap the Sandusky prosecution in 1998 even though there was good evidence. A little digging would have revealed a lot more.

I think Gricar put the money in a foreign account(s) that he managed with that laptop. Gricar always said that he wanted to travel the world when he retired, but he also had to ensure his state pension would go to his daughter.

I think Gricar is alive and well in Slovenia with relatives and they were the ones who helped him get out of Lewisburg in 2005.

As someone said on another thread, “What would Bear Bryant have done?” He probably would have gone down there and strangled the sonofabitch himself.

Amen.

I am an old woman and I can tell you I would have picked up the heaviest weight I could muster to throw at that piece of garbage Sandusky. He would stand there naked until the police arrived.

Paterno assisted in the many years of cover up.

Well from what I can gather JoePa passed this up the line and nothing got done either. No scapegoats or fall guys, the entire chain of command needs to get the sword.

“You, Mr. McQueary, are a failure as a fellow human being.”

####

So is his Daddy.

And Joe Paterno.

And dozens of others in the bulletproof Academic/Jock Royal Court at Penn State.

Really fans, are sports REALLY that damn important that you worship these people?

Great point. Doesn't take a Brainiac to understand there's not a lot of back & forth on these threads about McQueary and Spainer because people are pretty much in agreement with what should be done with them. However you still manage to find people who want to build statues to Paterno regardless of his sickening David Cash-like actions.

Be a police investigator? Get a clue. How about be a human?

Joe paterno has been at Penn State 61 years. He has broken every coaching record. Two national championships. Numerous awards. He has at least 10 million in his bank account. He is 85 years old. Has nothing else to prove. So WHY THE HELL DOES HE STILL WANT TO COACH? What is so freaking important about coaching 3-4 more games. Why can’t he step down right now?

He deserves to leave on his own terms. The people piling on Paterno just want to get rid of Paterno. He wasn’t diddling children and he wasn’t actively helping someone diddle children. Those are the people that need to be punished here.

The question to me is whether he stays to coach a bowl game or leaves at the end of the regular season.

Imagine being that 10 year old boy and seeing a 6’2” guy come in and thinking to yourself “thank God somebody will save me from this horror” and the faggot runs away.

Sad to say, but 10 yo boys these days are indoctrinated to think that homosexuality is a valid lifestyle choice. The kid may have been -- shall we say -- "confused" to begin with. Sandusky was cruising for such boys.

Incredibly Jerry Sandusky still had access to the football building and the weight room as recently as last week.

At a certain point, it all becomes about protecting the legacy...at all costs.

My son graduated Penn State, class of '09. We went up to a few games while he was up there. Football is an out of control cult in the now unHappy Valley. Totally insane on game day. It's crazy how much emphasis and money is put on the football program. Wish we had researched Spanier before sending him there.

I think we’ve only seen the ‘tip of the iceberg.’

Agreed. What I wonder is whether there are others on the staff or administration there that were also using the "shower facilities." Dastardly people, dastardly deeds.

Sandusky “retired” suddenly in 1999. I think Paterno ‘knew’ more than is being admitted about the ‘98 incident.

The bottom line is, if they really wanted to stop Sandusky from molesting more boys, they could have.

Paterno resigning at the end of the year is NOTHING. He was going to do that anyway.

I wonder what would have been done had it been one of Joe’s grandkids in that shower? You can bet your last Nittany Lion things would have been handled differently. Paterno would have done more than just “report it to his superiors”.

Don’t ALL children deserve the same consideration we would give our own during times like this?

If we start using “policy and laws” as barometers for our moral obligations, we are in big trouble.
