AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

But McQueary called his dad first, you know. And dad apparently told his son to call Paterno instead if the cops. Way to go, dad!

And what of ‘Second Mile’. There are a lot of really big names tied to the Second Mile board. They were supposedly notified in an attempt to pass the buck to them. If they were really notified why didn’t they do something? At this point one can only conclude they were never notified since they don’t seem to be part of the story.

I think we’ve only seen the ‘tip of the iceberg.’

So, Joe Pa is a threat?

Apparently not to 10-year-old girls.

Joe Pa only enables serial HOMOSEXUAL child rapists of 10-year-old boys.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

It’s not the truth, but the seriousness of the charges that’s driving things.

If you haven't read the 23 page indictment, I suggest you should. It is not for the squeamish.

Penn State is not serious about the enormity of what they have done. They will never recover from this. Jo Pa absolutely knew a child rapist worked for him and continued to rape children afterward. He and the entire creepy PSU admin covered it up and enabled it.

Mind boggling. Who witnesses an assraping of a ten year old boy and runs away? There is no hell deep enough.

As a college administrator I would’ve called Sandusky to my office and fired him. WE can have an investigation or he can walk. If we investigate then he’s fired.

I fired my boss’s (Vice President of Academic Affairs) wife (Director) when she was up to no good. Tough road to hoe for a while, as a result, but it had to be done.

I would say that Joe Paterno’s retirement will be anything but a retirement. I can foresee him being involved in many long and drawn out civil suits.

yes...way to go “Doctor” Dad.

You would think the MD would understand the importance to quicky find that boy as quickly as possible.

Get him medical attention....have him tested for evidence, arrange for his care in recovery, and put a stop to the madness for good.

Wasn’t Portland the women’s BB coach who was reprimanded because she didn’t want lesbians on her team? She was a great example of a coach who wanted the best for her players.

I haven’t read anything about what Second Mile knew, didn’t know, or did or didn’t do so I don’t know who at Second Mile should pay as well.

As a college administrator I would’ve called Sandusky to my office and fired him.

Sandusky wasn't on the payroll at the time of the 2002 report. He had retired in 1999.

“The trustees should can him today.”

I’ll go a step further: The NCAA should also hand Penn State the Death Penalty.

This is the worst scandal in college football history. This isn’t some booster buying a kid a sandwich, this is a vile crime that besmirches college football.

If the NCAA doesn’t do something drastic, it will lose all credibility in my book.

And what of McQuery who ran away when he witnessed the actual crime?
And what of Spainer who participated in the cover-up?

Those are my questions as well. It's tough to watch all the cretins pile on Paterno for failing to do his job as a police investigator and district attorney, but it's just human nature, I suppose. Small people always like to watch titans fall.

Bobby Bowden should come out of retirement and cherry pick a great team in a weak Conference. There is a big difference in the degree of criminal activity between Free Shoes University and Pedo State.

Joe allowed Sandusky to hang around the program and facilities after he knew of the sex abuse. The fact that Joe must have been seeing him and not following up on the allegations is unacceptable.

According to Peterno’s own testimony he did NOT have the impression they were ‘horsing around in the shower”:

“The next
morning, a Saturday, the graduate assistant telephoned Paterno and went to Paterno’s home,
where he reported what he had seen.
Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant’s report at his home on a
Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called
Tim Curley (”Curley”), Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno’s immediate superior, to his
home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry
Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a
young boy.”

But yes, McQueary and Spanier need to go also. They and Paterno should be fired today.
