Scandals of all kinds have tarnished college sports for decades, though what is unfolding at Penn State is hard to compare to any of them.
It's simply on another scale, both in terms of the charges - former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is accused of serial child sex abuse, which he denies - and the other person whom the case is bringing down, Joe Paterno.
The 84-year-old Paterno announced Wednesday he will retire at the end of this season, though the school's board of trustees might not let him coach even that long.

The Big Ten could tell Penn State to leave...and go back to having 10 members. But that would be too radical a solution.
Is there any way that PSU can have Paterno and McQueary on the sidelines anymore?
There are two other college football teams I keep close tabs on, both SEC teams, AL and FL. The former, I hope both AL and LSU come together again in the BCS bowl championship, a replay of the recent big game. It was fun. FL was wonderful not only to Tim Tebow, now pro, but a Henendez brother, his older brother played for UConn.
But the Big Ten could in turn look to invite UConn in.
