Eighteen-year-old Tahiem Goffe, shot by a Springfield police officer early Sunday morning as he allegedly ran down the officer on Taylor Street, died Monday night at Baystate Medical Center, according to police.
Police said Goffe deliberately drove at Police Officer Matthew Benoit, who was on foot at the time, striking Benoit and sending him airborne over the front corner of the vehicle and onto the pavement.
The officer was able to fire a round at the oncoming car to possibly save his life, Sgt. John M. Delaney said.
Benoit, who remains on paid administrative leave, was treated at Baystate Medical Center and released. Delaney, aide to Springfield Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet, said the department has begun an internal investigation into the shooting, as it automatically does with any shooting involving a police officer.
The results of that investigation will be forwarded to Hampden District Attorney Mark G. Mastroianni.
Goffe, who suffered a single gunshot wound, was also taken to Baystate, where he was listed in critical condition earlier Monday. Delaney was unable to provide information Tuesday morning as to what part of Goffes body was hit by the bullet.
The vehicle Goffe was driving, a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, had been reported stolen the day before from the parking lot of the Racing Mart on Boston Road, police said. It was occupied by three suspects.

Doesn’t sound “alleged” to me.
Picture of the cop?
His Mama will be on TV expounding on his virtues soon!!!
I note it isn't:
18-year-old Tahiem Goffe, allegedly shot by Springfield police as he allegedly ran officer down, dies at Baystate Medical Center
Guilt assumed for the cop, not the cur.
Wonder why it wouldn't be "18-year-old Tahiem Goffe, allegedly shot by Springfield police as he ran officer down, dies at Baystate Medical Center." Seems equally plausible.
That’s weird. It appears Chief Wiggum is cross eye dominant.
A few weeks back here in Michigan an officer was run down and killed by a couple of harmless parolees after they robbed a bank.
The one bright spot in that story is that the perps won’t be taking up prison space or air.
Proper training at the range usually pays off.
LOL I’m right handed but shoot left handed because my right eye sucks peanut butter.
To someone not in the employ of the state-owned media, it is equally plausible. If anything, it is more plausible.
Of course, we all know the answer to your obviously rhetorical question.
Reap it, homeboy.
Must have been one helluva cool cucumber to get off a fatal shot while getting hit by a car.
Springfield has turned into such a cesspool. And it used to be a great small city.
Baystate Medical Center saved my life after a car accident 22 years ago. Springfield was still barely worthy of salvage then, but today, its finished.
Another ‘entrepreneur’ bites the dust.
Springfield Police just taking out the garbage.....
“Guilt assumed for the cop, not the cur.”
I don’t think the cop is denying that he fired the shot... so what is your point?
“The officer was able to fire a round at the oncoming car to possibly save his life, Sgt. John M. Delaney said.”
No need to say “alleged” when the police spokesman states it as a fact that the officer fired the shot.
