Sandusky had the power to bring down the $$$ football money machine. They let him retire with honor in 1999 to protect the Penn State brand.
It didn't have to be that way. Sure they might have a taken a slight hit for exposing Sandusky, but it would have quickly blown over, and Paterno and Company, might actually come out looking like heroes for doing the right thing.
