Mexican Trucks Are On Our Roads (Taxpayers Pay to Help Them Run)

Mexican Trucks Are On Our Roads

by Phyllis Schlafly November 9, 2011 Phyllis Schlafly

After years of negative votes in Congress and the opposition of the American people, on October 21 Barack Obama allowed the first Mexican truck to cross the border at Laredo, Texas and head north to deliver door-to-door service of its load of industrial equipment. This implemented an agreement quietly signed by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in Mexico City on July 6 with Mexico's secretary of Communications and Transportation.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) calls this deal a major anti-jobs program, saying: "We're literally taking good jobs here in America and passing them over the line to Mexico." Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the Independent Drivers Association, a non-union trade association, said 100,000 trucking jobs will be lost.

The Mexican company that won the distinction of being first in line to cross the border was Transportes Olympic. FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) immediately granted it "Permanent Operating Authority," instead of making the company abide by the specified 18-month waiting period, which means Transportes' trucks will not have to be inspected at the border every time they cross.

FMCSA has announced that all Mexican trucks participating in this project will be given Electronic On-Board Recorders (EOBR) equipped with global positioning capabilities and paid for by the U.S. taxpayers. FMCSA also announced that U.S. trucks must install similar equipment at their own expense.

U.S. taxpayers are also being required to pick up the cost of replacing old mufflers on dozens of Mexican trucks at a cost of $1,600 each, while U.S. truckers must buy their own mufflers. The excuse is that this will improve air quality on our highways.

The first thing that lept out at me is that Schlafly is claiming that Transportes Olympic doesn’t have to abide by the requirements for a safety check. Yet Transportes Olympic participated in the Bush pilot program. It’s fairly safe to assume, as a veteran of these Mexican truck threads on FR, that Transportes Olympic has already passed the safety check, and Schlafly is playing you for a sucker.

I figured you'd respond that way, Dennis. So here is an example of you commenting on a FR thread back in 2007 about the Bush Administration allowing Transportes Olympic, among others, to haul into the interior of the United States.

Now, that's a far cry from stating that "GW backed off." So which one of you has shown up this evening, the idiot or the clown?

The fact that you’ve been following the Transportes Olympic threads doesn’t automatically qualify your claim. Would you post a link or two to reliable sources which substantiate your position?

Thank you,
TJI

#22 will suffice. The Bush Administration was adamant that the Mexican trucks involved in the pilot program had to satisfy the same safety regs as U.S. trucks. (And I've already given you more than Schlafly).

Don't get me wrong, the Obama Administration probably is up to some shenanigans. Sadly, I'll have to find out what they are on my own.

“Don’t get me wrong, the Obama Administration probably is up to some shenanigans. Sadly, I’ll have to find out what they are on my own.”

This is the particular information I’m interested in. What is or isn’t being done under the current administration.

Don’t bother with the “rude one”. He keeps seeing dollar signs selling his cheap Chinese steel in the U.S. and now has a cheaper way of delivering it using mexican labor and trucks.

Oh goody. The largest ands most used semi-trailer is 53'-0" long x 8'-6' wide. The inside dimensions are approx 52.5'x8' which is 420 Sq Ft, total inside area. And iirc the 'average person' requires 3 Sq Ft to stand, that's 140 people that could easily be packed into each trailer by human smugglers.

Ergo, if only 100 Semis crossed each day -- which is only One every 14.4 minutes -- in one 30 day period that's another 420,000 ILLEGALS that we WILL wind up supporting. Not to mention the TONS of drugs that a single semi can haul.

I know the election is approaching fast but Obama needs to be removed from office asap. Jan 20, 2013 is too dam late! Plus, just imagine what that pos will do from Nov to Jan when he loses. He will take out his revenge on America faster than you can say 'Poughkeepsie'.

IIRC his slurred intro stated the winners of the fight would be the Mexicans, uhh, the workers.

How many Mexican trucks cross the border right now? (And I would argue that 48-foot van trailers are more common than 53-foot, but something may have changed).

You still have to catch the truck smuggling the illegals. It makes no difference where the truck is headed (inside or outside the 25-mile zone).

Ok, I get it . . . when you stated "the very same crap," you meant the opposite.

How to speak protectionist:

"very same crap" = "grander idea."
