Have you been following this so-called supercommittee? They're the new superhero group of superfriends from the super-Congress who are going to save America from plummeting over the cliff and into the multitrillion-dollar abyss.
There's Spender Woman (Patty Murray), Incumbent Boy (Max Baucus), Kept Man (John Kerry) and many other warriors for truth, justice and the American way of debt. The supercommittee is supposed to report back by the day before Thanksgiving on how to carve out $1.2 trillion dollars of deficit reduction and thereby save the republic.
I had cynically assumed that the superfriends would address America's imminent debt catastrophe with some radical reform such as, say, slowing the increase in spending by raising the age for lowering the age of Medicare eligibility from 47 to 49 by the year 2137, after which triumph we could all go back to sleep until total societal collapse.
But I underestimated the genius of the superfriends' supercommittee. It turns out that a committee created to reduce the deficit is instead going to increase it. As the Hill reported:
"Democrats on the supercommittee have proposed that the savings from the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan be used to pay for a new stimulus package, according to a summary of the $2.3 trillion plan obtained by the Hill."
Do you follow that? Let the Congressional Budget Office explain it to you: "The budget savings from ending the wars are estimated to total around $1 trillion over a decade, according to an estimate in July from the Congressional Budget Office."
Let us note in passing that, according to the official CBO estimates, a whole decade's worth of war in both Iraq and Afghanistan adds up to little more than Obama's 2009 stimulus bill.

I think there should be a Constitutional amendment regarding eligibility to run for office.
Candidates should, at a minimum, have to demonstrate that they can successfully run a household budget and balance their checkbooks. If they can demonstrate that they manage to save money along the way, so much the better.
In Washington, nothing ever changes. All those austerity reports are gathering dust in a Pentagon basement. Austerity - what austerity? Everything is fine, trust us. And the Super Committee sees no great urgency to tackle the debt before the holidays ring in. None at all, indeed.
The Super-committee: the stupid party slept with the evil party and America got knocked up.
"So this has worked out great!" I told my wife, "I figure we've saved around a thousand bucks -- and with the money we've saved we can afford that flat-screen TV!"
On Wednesday, he signed an executive order "Promoting Efficient Spending" and ending government waste. Just like that! According to Section Seven: "Agencies should limit the purchase of promotional items (e.g., plaques, clothing and commemorative items), in particular where they are not cost-effective." ... Fresh from launching the war on tchotchkes, the administration then proposed a 15-cent tax on Christmas trees in order to fund a federal promotional campaign to promote the sale of Christmas trees. Possibly Commerce Department research showed that there's a dramatic fall-off in the sale of "holiday trees" round about Dec. 26 every year, and Obama figured a little stimulus surely couldn't hurt.
So yesterday our company spent part of a conf call debating which tchotchkes to buy for 2012 trade shows. Lo and behold, I awake to find that The Great Mark Steyn has not only used the word tchotchkes to describe the efforts of Congress, but has spelled it according to its Yiddish roots!
Steyn is a true wordsmith that writes poetry about politics, and cuts through the BS emanating from the DC Baltimore corridor to show it bare. Truly amazing.

As soon as I saw the Democrat mambers from the Senate that Harry Reid appointed, I knew it was doomed to failure.
The only thing Kerry knows about economics is to marry well. Twice if you have to.
Patty Murray is a Communist.
Poor Max Bauman is just a plain drunken idiot.

I was going to do just that but couldn’t get the links to work. Hmm.
That would require common sense and common sense and government don’t go together.
They'll have us back on a steady course in no time at all.
Dems are desperately seeking ways to bail out their union buddies, yet again. Porkulus was a giant union slush fund (some of which has returned or will return to Dems campaign coffers) which bailed out blue and swing states public workers’ unions. The party lasted another two years, but now those states are back to square one.
We got our flat screen TV off the saving my wife racked up by spending $17K - total savings was over $3K so we got us a nice one. How do you like yours?
The Pubbies were COMPLETE IDIOTS for agreeing to this committee in the first place. Idiots!
And we killed people and blew stuff up.
Every time I read or listen to Mark Steyn I feel smarter
and the COST of the war is not really a meaningful figure- we would have had to pay those military people anyway
True, although we pay them more when they’re in combat zones, and then there are a variety of additional costs to a war-type-thing over the troops’ being held in “readiness.”
