UP to 12 fighter-bombers are to be part of a massive security operation for President Barack Obama's visit to Darwin on Thursday.
Soldiers, federal and Territory police, and up to 500 US secret service agents will also keep the President safe.
The Australian Defence Department said the F/A-18 Hornets would be an ``important component'' of the security arrangements.
The President will lay a wreath at the USS Peary memorial in Darwin and talk to troops at the RAAF base.
A US official said: ``The President and Prime Minister Gillard together will address Australian troops in Darwin.'
That’s a lot of manpower to guard a steaming pile.

Isn’t the host country generally responsible for security? So this is in addition to what the Aussies are providing, right? How many tens of millions is this costing us?

I wonder if there will be any left behind to protect our "Gaffe-Master Extraordinaire" Joe "Plugs" Biden?
On 2nd thought who would want to take ol' Joe out anyway, other than those from his own Party of Surrender and Defeat (the Demo-Rats) who are embarrassed almost daily by his "faux pas" and "foot-in-mouth disease?"
As an aside I read that Bambi's trip will cost $9 Mil, but that didn't take into consideration the cost of all of his entourage, the military protection, his armored limos and helo's as well as all of these SS service personnel who most will probably end up spending days (if not weeks) preparing to his Royal Highness' visit.
