One of the reasons I built where I did is because of my living in the city. One day we were walking around AA, it was during the Tienanmen Square massacre I remember, and I was watching the demonstrations downtown. I kept thinking about what I would do if things got bad here, and I realized how dependent I was on the system.

My water, food, electricity, fuel, everything I would need or want I would be in line with tens of thousands of others completely dependent on someone else to supply them. After I got married and moved down here that was always in the back of my mind. I wanted a well and septic, not city water and sewer, and a way to generate my own power, at least for a while. I have a geotherm furnace with the lake as my heat source, and everything else in my home is electric also, so as long as I have my tractor with its big PTO generator and some diesel fuel I could live like I do now while the world goes to hell in a handbasket around me. I have plenty of game on the property, especially fish, so if I could keep people away from us I could do pretty well. 100 acres of hardwoods also means a lot of firewood, something else that could come in handy in a pinch too.
