Penn State is the one team no bowl wants to invite

Penn State is toxic.

Those aren't my words, but someone involved in the college bowl selection process. And that's how he described how attractive -- or, in this case, unattractive -- the Nittany Lions are as a bowl team.

The Big Ten has eight bowl bids and could end up with 10 bowl-eligible teams. If the Nittany Lions (8-2) don't reach the Big Ten title game, it's a very real possibility they could get bypassed by all of the Big Ten bowls and be shipped to a non-Big Ten bowl that doesn't have enough teams to fill its conference obligation.

"And do you think that bowl will be thrilled?" a college football industry source said. "It's like finding out your daughter is dating Tiger Woods. What do you say: uh, congratulations?"

If the Nittany Lions win the Leaders Division -- they'll likely need a win at Wisconsin on Nov. 26 to do so -- they cannot drop any lower than the Gator Bowl, which has the Big Ten's fifth selection, according to the league's bylaws. However, if Penn State doesn't win the its division, it is treated like any other Big Ten bowl-eligible team and must wait to be selected by one of the league's bowls.

That could be a long wait.

"I can't see someone eager to take them," a bowl official said. "I don't think you want that story on your hands. When you bring a bowl team to your community, you want warm, fuzzy stories about student athletes. You don't want what's going on there."

I believe Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football made the racist remark about a football player of color running “like a little monkey” or words to that effect; there were the usual lame excuses about since he was a far left liberal, Cosell “didn’t have a racist bone in his body” (many of the liberals I’ve known are the biggest racists I’ve ever met). Hopefully, Penn State’s next bowl invitation will be to the Tidy Bowl since that institution’s name is now mud.

Penn State should have already announced it will not be participating in a Bowl game this year.

True dat! And since they did not and the B10 has not done anything, I am now rooting for them to win the B10 Championship and make it to the Rose Bowl.

Agree 100% with both comments. What an embarrassment to the Big 10 if Penn State makes it to Pasadena. The PSU acting president or trustees should have already taken them out of bowl consideration.

I agree with you, some people just do not know when to keep their mouths shut.

Penn State travels well. They bring fans to the game and money to the event. And this year I would expect Penn State would bring a large TV audience. Many non-BCS bowls struggle financially. Forget this article; money talks, BS walks. Penn State will go where their record slots them.

They've probably already budgeted the anticipated funds.

Sorry, you are punishing a school program that thought their game was more important than little kids. The players can remove themselves and if they have any pride they will and if the players do not remove themselves they need to have enabler put on their jersey.

I wouldn’t be so quick to say they won’t get a bowl game.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2011/11/penn-state-nebraska-telecast-doubles-espns-tv-ratings-joe-paterno-jerry-sandusky/1

ESPN’s telecast of visiting Nebraska’s win over Penn State at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa. drew a 3.8 overnight TV rating, according to ESPN spokesman Michael Humes. That’s up 120% from the comparable game telecast last season: Iowa-Northwestern.

The game had an early kickoff time of 12 noon ET. The 3.8 is the highest noontime game rating for college football on ESPN since at least 2001.

As much as I dislike Penn State and disgusted by the entire Sandusky’s NAMBLA lifestyle, this report is bogus.

Publically, bowl officials may say their ‘nervous’ about Penn State going to their bowl, but privately they want Penn state because Penn State fans travel very well(sells tickets, hotel rooms etc) and are a good draw for TV ratings(revenue for a network).

Bottom line: Money Talks and controversy sells.

You may be correct, what is more important here football are little kids. From the circling of the wagons at the last game, they said it was the games, to hell with the kids.

I could go into a longer diatribe on this and many other issues, but I only have time for the pithy statement:

For too many people, their conscience stops at their wallet.

I feel badly for the innocent Penn State fans, but the NCAA should make them pay such a steep price that no college would ever think of trying to cover something up ever again - say they dismantle the football program for ten years or something along that line.
No college would ever dare harbor/protect creeps like that again.

Penn St. should sack their cheerleaders and have a bunch of 10-12 year boys on the sidelines as cheerleaders.

The young men, especially the seniors, should not be ridiculed this way. The players aren’t to blame for this mess.

What about all the other players on USC’s teams that lost a national championship over Reggie Bush’s actions?

Or the clean SMU players when it got the death penalty?

I’m sick of the “don’t punish innocents” argument. You’re part of a child molesting ring even if you weren’t the actual perpetrator bad stuff comes your way. Tough.

Whichever bowl invites them can probably offer package deals (for travel, lodging and entertainment) to NAMBLA members.

Seem to me that the folks in Happy Valley have the opposite problem.
