Penn State is toxic.
Those aren't my words, but someone involved in the college bowl selection process. And that's how he described how attractive -- or, in this case, unattractive -- the Nittany Lions are as a bowl team.
The Big Ten has eight bowl bids and could end up with 10 bowl-eligible teams. If the Nittany Lions (8-2) don't reach the Big Ten title game, it's a very real possibility they could get bypassed by all of the Big Ten bowls and be shipped to a non-Big Ten bowl that doesn't have enough teams to fill its conference obligation.
"And do you think that bowl will be thrilled?" a college football industry source said. "It's like finding out your daughter is dating Tiger Woods. What do you say: uh, congratulations?"
If the Nittany Lions win the Leaders Division -- they'll likely need a win at Wisconsin on Nov. 26 to do so -- they cannot drop any lower than the Gator Bowl, which has the Big Ten's fifth selection, according to the league's bylaws. However, if Penn State doesn't win the its division, it is treated like any other Big Ten bowl-eligible team and must wait to be selected by one of the league's bowls.
That could be a long wait.
"I can't see someone eager to take them," a bowl official said. "I don't think you want that story on your hands. When you bring a bowl team to your community, you want warm, fuzzy stories about student athletes. You don't want what's going on there."

Indeed. The guilty - or the alleged guilty - should bear the onus, not the players. If I were in this situation, and not a senior, I would seriously look into transferring.
From the way this is shaping up, from student riots to the coverup it might be a representative of the school and administration.
In my view, there are too many Bowl games. Over 30 of the damn things now. I’m surprised there’s not a bowl game in Pocatello, ID called the Uncle Pootie’s Potato Patch Bowl.

If I were a Penn State fan, I wouldn’t exactly be boasting about it right now, much less traveling to their games.
Well here is their halftime show
They have legions of mind-numbed fans and alums, who even today are circling the wagons around Paterno. They will send a huge contingent to spend money at whatever bowl they go to. And they will be chosen by one.
I’ll let the story play out regarding the administration.

It is most likely representative of an emotional reaction to the news that their beloved “JoePa” had been fired.
I’m willing to bet that, at that point, most of those kids had not read the GJ testimony.
Most had probably read the brief news articles, most of them ending with a version of....”Joe Paterno has not been implicated....”, or “Joe Paterno fulfilled his legal duty..”, or “Joe Paterno is not a target of the investigation”....
So...it didn’t seem “that bad” to them.
The meme being circulated about town was “Joe got hosed” or “Joe is just a scapegoat” “They’re taking the heat off themselves by sacrificing Joe”...and then the ever present “it’s the media’s fault”
Hence the tipped over media van.
Once everyone settles down - does more reading - and lets the gravity of the situation sink in, I think you’ll see a different mood among the students.
I’m not trying to win the soap box derby but I’m sure after waking up, most of the students will regret their participation and attitudes. Just like JoePA has regrets.

For me, I feel we have to stand by the prosecution because he stands by the child victims who no one cared about all those years through all that twisted abuse.
Usually I don’t get into the Nancy Grace mode with the clawing herd. It is morally right to me to pick sides now to show support for the child abuse vicitms, but it is not all the comfortable.
It’s too bad the students rioted. They moved the scorn target to the whole school when they showed the country they have no capicity for ethics like the ones who hid/accomodated the abuse at their school.
A boys’ precious nature and lives do come before a corrupted football program and University. It was really too bad that happened because it fed the fury. But I think it was a real reflection of the amoral culture at Penn State and was good to come out for everyone to see. It is animalistic.
Penn State fans would never ridicule a rival team if this happened to them, I’m sure. ;)
Ohio State has been urging their fans to keep it classy this weekend...good luck with all that.
I say they should keep it as classy as the Penn State rioters did.
Whenever the NCAA sanctions a team...most of those who are guilty...are no longer part of the program when the sanctions come down.
To hear you tell it, the NCAA should rarely go after a program 3-4 years after the fact because most of those associated with that offending program have "moved on." Sorry. But institutional life doesn't work that way.
