My brother is currently in North Dakota in charge of pipeline building and production facilities. He also worked in Northern Alaska in the seventies, operating out of the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory in Point Barrow.
Me, I think I’ll stick it out here in Northern Michigan, where our winters are mild compared to those places.

I get the definite idea that it was not considered a plum assignment.

No it is not and neither is Minot. Actually, when I came back from Vietnam, I tried to change my assignment from Del Rio, TX to Grand Forks. I ended up going to TX anyway. Now that I think back, I am glad I went to TX. Grand Forks was a good place to grow up, but not to live. Many of my high school classmates still live in Grand Forks. I don't think my Philippine born wife, used to tropical weather, could take that cold either.
