The vice chairman of the Second Mile, the charity founded by an assistant Penn State football coach who faces child sexual abuse charges, said Tuesday that he couldn't predict whether the organization would remain viable beyond December.
The Second Mile, of State College, Pa., has about 20 employees and had revenue of $2.2 million last year. It has enough cash to last through the end of the year, said David Woodle, vice chairman of the Second Mile.
Gov. Tom Corbett's office confirmed the state has suspended a planned $3 million grant to the Second Mile "pending further review." The grant was to have helped pay for a "learning center" near State College.
Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was indicted Nov. 5 on charges he sexually abused boys over a 15-year period. A grand jury report said he found the alleged victims at the Second Mile. He has said he is innocent. The charges spurred a scandal that led to the removal of head football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier.

Ya THINK?!?!?!
Governor Corbett (R) was elected a year ago and took office last January. But it’s noticeable that he seems to have inherited a lot of possibly interesting connections from his predecessor(s).
He is on the board of Penn State, and he voted to fire Joe Paterno.
He earlier approved $3 million in state funds for The Second Mile but now is having second thoughts. I presume this was not the first time the state supported this charity.
I also presume that his predecessor(s) had similar, possibly incestuous connections with Penn State and Second Mile. Nothing wrong with funding what seems to be a charity that helps disadvantaged kids. But this may suggest why the coverup continued, although it would seem to go against someone like Joe Paterno’s character. They all must have had strong reasons to go along with the coverup.
Was the State Judge who just let Sandusky go free without any payment or supervision elected, or appointed by the governor’s predecessor? There’s a potential power network here, I think.
What came before, I do not know. But current Governor Corbett was AG before being elected governor. He has said that he knows other details but can not share them due to their confidential nature within the AG’s office. As for the judge, she was connected with the foundation. She has been reassigned and any other charges against Sandusky will be handled by one who has no connections to him or the foundation.
Lot of big schools have their state governor as an ex officio member of the board of Trustees. My alma mater does, and it's a private institution.
It's kind of honorary. An article earlier this week said that when Gov. Corbett announced his (very unusual) decision to attend the meeting of the Trustees in person, it was clear that Paterno and Spanier were history.
Normally, he sends a "representative."
Oh, yeah. That's what the remaining cash was given for to the foundation -- To give 20 lame duck employees 5 more paychecks before they go under.
Tell you what. Give them all two more weeks of work -- thru November...with liberal time off to look for a new job...And then give them each a 2-week severance package on Dec. 1 and call it good...I mean...call the whole enterprise "bad!"
