They bonded in the heat of battle in war-torn Afghanistan.

And these heart-warming pictures show how the stray dogs who helped soldiers through their toughest times are being thanked - with a new loving home.

US soldiers regularly make best friends with loyal Afghan dogs, who are invaluable companions on the front line and provide relief after days of brave and exhausting fire fights.

And now these lucky pets have been reunited with the servicemen who befriended them with while on duty. ...

British charity Nowzad Dogs, which was started by former British Royal Marine Pen Farthing, who served in Afghanistan, masterminded the huge operation to relocate the animals. ...

The marine started his mission to protect Afghan dogs five years ago when as a serving soldier he witnessed a poor mongrel being used by local police in a dog fight.

He intervened and rescued the dog, whose tail and ears had been cut off by locals.

While spending a little vacation time in Vietnam in 68-69 I happened upon a puppy that was small enough to sit in a coffee cup. He became mine and was named Dawg. For a year we almost never separated. He even flew with me on a few occasions. When it was time to come home it was natural for me to bring Dawg. By the time I found out what was entailed with paperwork, costs and a long time in quarantine I decided it just couldn't be done. Strange, but there isn't a day that goes by that Dawg doesn't enter my mind. He kept me sane in an insane place.

My Marine son is one of those who got their platoon dog “Kujo” shipped to the US at the end of their first Afghanistan deployment. It was quite a challenge raising the money to make this happen, getting this huge dog transported through hostile territory, and coordinating with Nowzad Dogs to make sure Kujo arrived safely at his new, adoptive home with the Parkers in Waco, Texas. At times, the whole process seemed impossible, but Nowzad came through with flying colors!

My wife put together a video about Kujo’s saga, which can be seen on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNCpU2zvyZU

And yes, we’ve gone to Waco a few times from California just to visit this amazing dog (and his wonderful new family).

If you need a worthy cause to support, I can’t say enough about Nowzad. What an amazing organization.

If anyone is interested, Farthing has written a couple of books about this project. I just downloaded one to my Kindle.

Doggies are excellent judges of character.

Muslims despise dogs and treat them cruelly. I have read right here on FR that the stray dogs of Afghanistan know exactly where to go for a little kindness...Our Military!

Any society that loathes “Man’s Best Friend” has deep “issues”.

On the other hand, look how they treat the Female of OUR OWN Species!

Good to get them out of there (so that they do not end up as Halal Terriers)

Dawg enters your mind because Dawg is thinking of you and your kindness towards him.

dogs are God’s gift to mankind. They have saved lives, helped the blind and disabled and even brought love and sanity back into the lives of criminals.
This is a beautiful story and thanks for sharing it.
