Why is anyone surprised by these Newt revelations?

He is and long has been a Washington insider who shapes his public comments and positions on what suits him at the time financially and politically. That's why we can spend all day going back and asking why he said this or why he said that or what he really believes.

Since his current goal is securing Republican votes in primaries, he is throwing red meat out to a large GOP voting bloc in his debates and interviews. And the hungry electorate is lapping it up so he rises in the polls.
