Gun control advocates were on Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon to ask members of Congress to pass legislation that would tighten gun-buying restrictions. It was part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign, led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Tom Menino, to make it more difficult for convicted criminals and people found mentally ill from purchasing guns.—Governing.com
Founded in 2006 with 15 mayors at its core, including former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has become a powerful voice in the gun prohibition movement, while hardly uttering a squeak about some of its own members who have run afoul of the law.
It might be argued that Nickels violated state law when he unsuccessfully imposed a ban on legally-carried firearms in Seattle city park facilities, after being advised by State Attorney General Rob McKenna that the ban was illegal. It took a court challenge led by the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and the National Rifle Association, to make it official, as this column reported.
But what Nickels did is insignificant compared to other members of the organization, spearheaded by anti-gun New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. Look them up here, and here, and you find enough examples of corruption in government to raise suspicions that it might be better to require background checks for mayoral candidates than would-be gun buyers. Former Detroit, MI Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. His political career came to a train wreck halt when he pleaded guilty to a pair of felony obstruction charges (he was trying to hide an extramarital affair), and pleading no contest to an assault charge against the cop who was serving a subpoena on a friend

· Eddie Alberto Perez, the first Hispanic mayor of Hartford, CT pulled a three-year prison sentence “for accepting deeply discounted home repairs and trying to extort a payoff on behalf of a political ally,” according to the Hartford Courant.
· Birmingham, AL Mayor Larry Langford was automatically removed from office last year when he was convicted on 60 counts of federal corruption, which included charges of bribery and money laundering.
· Gary Becker was the mayor of Racine, WI when he was indicted on five felony counts for child pornography, child enticement and attempted child sexual assault, according to various accounts. He pulled a three-year prison sentence.
· Former Guttenberg, NJ Mayor David Delle Donna and his wife both pulled prison sentences of more than four years in prison after being convicted for tax evasion and extortion.

I disagree though: This is a “moral” item with the left, not anything debatable or even logically promoted like this writer, who tries to tie it to the illegal actions of several mayors. They (dis)honestly “feel” - believe as a matter of faith stronger than that of ANY supposed religion (which they don't practice in any other way!) - that if everybody were disarmed, then crime would stop.
The mayor of Louisville, KY was apart of this group against guns. Now the morons in Kentucky have just recently elected him to the office of Lt. Governor. Kentucky has historically been one of the most pro-gun states in the nation. So much for that track record now.
The reason many of these politicians are for gun control is that they themselves are afraid they are going to be shot for their own crooked behavior.

Then how do you explain Sarah Brady who got exposed by gun owners when she bought a rifle for her nephew after having pushed the Brady bill through congress. There's more. Hypocrites
How do you explain NY’s Sullivan law, brought about by the politicians fear of assassination?
Or Diane Feinstein, vehemently opposed to peons having guns, but having a carry permit herself for many years.
It is already illegal for convicted felons and those adjudicated in a court of law as mentally incompetent to purchase own or be in possession of firearms. I would like to know what they had in mind to go beyond that. I'm sure that truth is an ugly one.

They want “mentally ill” to include anyone who has ever been diagnosed with any mental disorder, to include things like ADD and ADHD, or anyone who as ever been prescribed an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant drug. That’s a net that will catch a lot of healthy Americans.

Sullivan law was designed to deny the right of self defense to politicians who were of “the other party”.
Members of “the other party” would sew their pockets shut to keep crooked police from claiming that a pistol was found in said “the other party” politician’s pocket.

I get so tired of the equating a “criminal” with a mentally ill perons. One could rightly say that a returning veteren with PTSD is “mentally ill”, but it doesn’t make them a criminal or a murderer. As long as they would change that to “adjudicated mentally ill” (meaning by a court of law) where the person had legal protection...then it wouldn’t upset me so.
Trying to evaluate the situation from a more rational perspective, and asking, “Why would someone in a position of power want to limit my ability to defend myself and my loved ones?”, the very best possible answer is that they are misguided and ignorant. The worst possibility is something far more insidious.
I found this quote in Louis L’Amour’s book “The Lonesome Gods”:
“Our constitution provides that no law shall forbid us from keeping and bearing arms because of the necessity for a militia. We have a militia of a sort, but our greatest strength lies in the fact that so many of our people not only possess weapons but also understand their use, and above all they are prepared to defend themselves against any sudden attack by an enemy.
“You will remember that we won our freedom because we were armed. We were not a simple peasantry unused to weapons. The men who wrote our Constitution knew our people would be safe as long and they were armed.”
From “North to the Rails”:
“Understand one thing……You can make laws against weapons but they will be observed only by those who don’t intend to use them anyway. The lawless can always smuggle or steal, or even make a gun. By refusing to wear a gun you allow the criminal to operate with impunity.”
