Sodium and potassium regulate water inside and outside of the cell. Sugar replaces glycogen which is burned during sports. Gatorade was made for athletes. A normal person doesn’t need Gatorade. Water and proper nutrition are fine. You can get plenty of sodium and potassium from food.

I was basing my comments on someone who’s dehydrated almost to the point of collapse. EMT’s use an electrolyte based re-hydration. Any strenuous activity needs something more than just plain water.
