Students studying Spanish in a Texas public high school were asked to recite the Mexican national anthem and Mexican pledge of allegiance as part of an assignment, and when one student refused, stating that it upset her, the school district maintains there was nothing wrong with the lesson, writes Madeleine Morgenstern at the Blaze.
The incident happened last month at Achieve Early College High School in McAllen, Texas — a city located about 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
15-year-old sophomore Brenda Brinsdon refused to participate, stating that she was particularly offended because the presentations in teacher Reyna Santos’s class took place during “Freedom Week,” the week after the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and on U.S. Constitution Day — the same day as Mexico’s Independence Day, writes Morgenstern.
“I just thought it was out of hand, I didn’t think it was right,” she told The Blaze. “Reciting pledges to Mexico and being loyal to it has nothing to do with learning Spanish.”
She added:
“Why are we doing their independence when it‘s Freedom Week and it’s also Constitution Day?”

Mexico strikes me as a supremely racist nation. The Spaniard Mexicans have all the political power, are the TV stars and hosts, are the cops, are the professionals. We have a black president, many black and hispanic politicians, and many rich black entertainers and sports figures (Oprah and Michael Jordan were sole top earners in their professions for years).
And yet everybody calls us racist. Mexico is deeply racist, bu then that is a hallmark of most non-western nations.
Mexico is a very racist nation. The Spanish-Mexican treatment, both white and mestizo, of the Mexican-Indians is criminal. And yet our politicians never complain about it nor do they ever complain about the disparity in our immigration policies and Mexico’s.
Horrible stuff. We have so many enemies among us...
That these lawbreakers are allowed to get away with threats against Americans is unconscionable.
If you or I threaten to kill someone——we would be charged with a very serious crime.
