BOULDER -- In the first police action related to the Occupy Boulder movement, officers early Monday morning ticketed 11 people in a makeshift camp outside the Boulder County courthouse along the Pearl Street Mall.

According to police records, officers issued a total of 10 tickets on charges of illegal camping or public urination.

Additionally, police ticketed P.J. Jentsch for having a dog on the mall. His 3-year-old border collie mix, Shelby, garnered national media attention after being elected leader of the Occupy Denver movement in early November following a request from Denver Mayor Michael Hancock that protesters designate a representative.

"We absolutely understand people's desire to gather and protest, whether as part of the Occupy movement or any cause," Commissioner Ben Pearlman said in a prepared statement. "However, in the interest of public health and safety, we can't allow camping in front of the courthouse. We apply these rules consistently, no matter the subject, in order to be fair and equitable."

Perlman and his two henchmen on the Boulder County Commission, are three of the most uber-liberal pols on the planet. It's heartening to see that they at least still believe in enforcing the law, and enforcing it equally. (Also, no doubt they know they can't allow a precedent of illegal camping on the County Building lawns, as they know it would devolve into a permanent garbage heap of competing lunatic interests, making Zuccotti Park look like, well, a walk in the park. These lawns are part of the Boulder downtown Pearl Steet Mall, and turning it into Zuccotti Park would wreck downtown Boulder commerce. The commissioners know this as well.)

The Boulder County Courthouse is a beautiful art-deco building. Glad to see they've come to their senses about not desecrating it. Urine and feces all around Pearl Street would not be a good idea.

Boulder is used to radical demonstrators and unbathed drug using groups of people. Boulder was Hippy central in the 60s with lots of riots and demonstrations. Before that was the beatnik bunch but they were much more peaceful.
