WEST DEPTFORD TWP. — For many residents here, the story unfolded like an insulting hyperbole for the loss of American industry to other shores.

Word was, the Sunoco Eagle Point Plant — at least part of it — was to be dismantled, loaded onto ships, and taken piece-by-piece to India’s east coast, to be rebuilt over there.

But officials with Sunoco and a federal lending institution purported to be involved in a $505 million deal to move the refinery have said no such deal has been made.

At least not yet.

Just to clarify, this is a refinery that is currently shut, having been idled 2 years ago, and Sunoco has been looking to sell the equipment. Vishakapatnam is one of the largest ports in India, and one of the few capable of handling the big crude carriers. Moving this refinery won’t cost any jobs, and won’t impact active refinery capacity in the US anyway since it was used to produce Toluene, Benzene, and Xylene.

The Murphy refinery at Superior, WI (now owned by Calumet) was built in Wyoming, then cut down and moved.

Although I agree we do not need the refinery capacity as the US has become a net exporter of refined products, this refinery produced transportation fuels as well as chemcial feedstock back before it shut down in 2009.
