Shepherdsville, KY (WDRB) -- The coroner's office has identified the man who was shot in the head following a struggle with a homeowner. Police say he was trying to steal items from the woman's home.
25-year-old Christopher Sanford died of that wound Monday at 2:26 at U of L Hospital
A woman who lives at the house on Blue Ash Drive returned home with her twin boys around 11 a.m. Sunday to find an intruder pointing a shotgun at her.
A man who spoke to a reporter at the home declined to identify his wife by name, but said the intruder pointed the shotgun at his wife after taking it from their bedroom.
The man said his wife, a Navy veteran and former military officer, lunged at the male suspect, struggling with him and the gun throughout the home before ending up in the front yard where the gun went off striking the suspect in the head, the man and authorities confirmed.
"He was bleeding from the head when I arrived on scene," said Armstrong.
Neighbor Jamie Bartsch couldn't help wonder about the safety of her neighbors. She says police have warned residents of a rash of recent break-ins in the area.
"Pretty scary...ya know," Bartsh said.
Carol Mills, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred, said neighbors called her while she was at church Sunday morning to warn her the suspect was attempting to break into her house.
"It makes me feel unsafe," Mills said.
Mills says she thinks her small dog might have scared off the suspect. She says she's proud of her neighbors actions during what she called a "harrowing experience."

Outstanding.. congrats. One less piece of scum is gone.
I hope for the day liberals will try to invade my home so I can do the same.

Way to go Navy! I love a happy ending.
A happy ending for a nice Thanksgiving story.
I'll bet he was...what was left of it.
No, the gun just "went off". (Guns, just like SUVs have minds of their own, and must be banned!)
Love happy endings that bring tears-of-joy to my eyes...
I think with Obama’s Occupy thugs you are going to get your wish real soon!
“She says police have warned residents of a rash of recent break-ins in the area.”
The police were helpless to stop it but this lady was more than capable. Looks like less job security and doughnuts for the cops for the time being.
I think that the problem may be not so much of issue for the next while, if not for a long time. Even if this guy isn't the only perp, it will send a message to his friends.
...for those interested. :D

I think that has been taken care of. Nice work.
Glad it worked out for her... but... *IF* this account is accurate, the shotgun came from within the property, and was likely not properly secured.
