Congresswoman Bachmann appears to be conveniently forgetting her own views on immigration in order to score political points. During the presidential debate at the Reagan Library on September 7, she said she won't deport all 11 million illegal immigrants here in the United States.
[Full transcript from New York Times]
HARRIS: A quick 30-second rebuttal on the specific question. The fence is built, the border is under control. What do you do with 11.5 million people who are here without documents and with U.S.- born children?
BACHMANN: Well, that's right. And again, it is sequential, and it depends upon where they live, how long they have been here, if they have a criminal record. All of those things have to be taken into place.
Self-deporting does work well. “I’m sorry, but you must be in our country legally to [hold a job]/[buy a house]/[open a bank account]/[receive social services]” etc. Also, I think “How do you plan to pay for this?” should be a standard question for anyone receiving medical care in a hospital, and if they don’t pay, the bill gets turned over to a collection agency so they get hounded and harassed and sued.
Of course we can’t deport 11 million people. The idea is a diversionary tactic by the open borders crowd that gives a false choice between all or nothing. I do believe that if you come to the attention of law enforcement and it is discovered that you are here illegally, you are sent back to your home country. Exceptions would be very few and very specific, such as you have a terminal disease with six months to live, or you are a brilliant scientist about to codify the Unified Field Theory, or it is certain that your home country’s government will murder you when you return. “It would be inconvenient for me because two of my kids are in school” is not a good enough excuse. It really galls me that we know that two of Obama’s relatives are here illegally, yet they are allowed to stay for nonspecific reasons. They should have been gone instantly, the same day they were discovered.
Nice try playing that card. Congress can and does define the terms of naturalization and alien residency with impunity. A new form of alien residency aimed specifically at those who circumvented the legal immigration process should cause no problems and Congress could make it non-reviewable by the courts.
Shhh. You're on to them! You'll make heads explode too because there's this freeper myth of a candidate who will deport 10+ million illegals.
When Perry was being attacked for his temporary guest worker visa idea, I pointed to video of Palin offering much the same in a 2010 interview.
The fact remains, a whole lot of those people will stay and Newt's been willing to actually illustrate how he might go about handing all those cases. Other candidates dodge and weave to avoid ruffling elements in the "conservative" base.
