During construction of the Trans Alaska Pipeline in the 70’s, Valdez went from around 700 people to 11,000, and most of them were housed in man camps made of Atco trailers stacked three storeys high, near what we called “Terminus,” or the end of the pipeline.

Instead of bringing in all sorts of travel trailers, bring in Intermodal shipping containers and convert them into housing. The containers come in 20x8-foot, 40x8-foot, 48x8-foot, and 53x8-foot lengths. They can be brought in by rail or truck and conversions can be done on-site (thereby employing locals. The Intermodals can be converted to any size required (weld ‘em together) and can be stacked on each other to increase occupant density and efficiencies.

Intermodals are tough and configuration is only limited by imagination. There are nearly 800,000 surplus shipping containers available and piling up in U.S. ports. Problem: excess shipping containers. Solution: cheap and sturdy housing for the ND oil patch workers. This is a win-win for all concerned.
