Surviving a car disintegrating at speed just might have cured him. It would sure cure me.
It was straight open highway in the MN countryside on a beautiful afternoon. No trees.
Maybe there weren’t enough visual clues for me to see the tunnel?
I don’t think I’ll be trying that around trees at night time. :-0
In a stock big port 4V Cleveland the initial limiting factor was the distributor ,, the plate the points were mounted to would wobble and cause a misfire at moderately high (5000-5500) rpm .. a simple distributor change with the better engineered 460 distributor (a straight bolt in) would let you run up to the point where you hit valve float.
My quickest car was a 1967 bug , acid bathed down to 1200# wet , 1835cc dual 48 webers , balanced “scat” crank , 13:1 compression , no cooling system except for running the jets rich , solid lifter , backdated with swing axles because it broke IRS’s BAD... running on 13” formula ford sized slicks .. it would run with “10 second” cars to 1/8th mile , then it would die in 4th gear as it was TALL TALL TALL ,,, it was an auto-x/pro-solo (D Prepared) car and I didn’t need 4th .. NOTHING LAUNCHES HARDER THAN A REAR ENGINED CAR.
The next time I took it to the shop I jokingly told the mechanic that it had a slight shimmy around 122 MPH. He expressed serious concern and said hed check it out.

My 300E 4matic was always drama free at any speed.
Yes,
There are trees everywhere here. Leave a field fallow and don’t keep it cut back, you’ll have poplars and pines over your head in a few years. Hard to find a road without them nearby.
None!!!!...that I could see, anyway...and whoever did the body work did an incredible job and hid it well.
Great re-do black paint job with a gold pin stripping...two dashboard cracks (I think standard), an AC that blew cold and the previous owner had a CD player put in. Other than that, original. Long story but I bought it from my Ex when she needed the cash a year after we divorced.
Bottom line, one of the greatest cars I ever owned or drove.
About 3 years after owning it a strong tick developed in the engine and I parked it until I had could have it looked at...never did...and a year after parking it someone offered me $4 grand for it as it sat...seemed liked he would love it like I did and I took it.
"Miss that car!!!!!"
Italian cars and Italian women (my first wife); a lot of fun in the beginning...
My 74 Beetle would run 87mph WOT (not quite stock) and it felt quite squirrely even at that speed. The books said the rounded body surfaces would start giving you lift at 100mph without a lot of fairing.
But it would leave the line nicely.
That black paint job and being that low to the ground??? Are you kidding me? Nice ride, bro!!!! Leather seats????
Good grief -- I've had had my '65 Barracuda over 125mph -- and its engine is only 273 CI...
Of course, it is a Formula "S"...
Had a 72 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland. One night on I465 I decided to see what it would do. I got it up to 115 and the tach showed it was capable of more but I was weaving all over the road. It was the aerodynamics and 115 was good enough for me.
Chicks loved it, though. I had her from age 24-26.
Same old refrain. That was an era where power was way ahead of chassis and aero design. Those scrawny bias ply tires were like wet noodles. Luckily not so many just blew out at speed from the wretched design.
What we seem to have today is capable cars, but still have brakes that are far short of the rest of the car's envelope. Big brakes are only sexy to car nerds........
How do you get a Chrysler to do 119?
So how would you interpret it if the needle was a dozen ticks or so past 120? It was a 390 mill!
A 390 can’t do it? It was in Michigan on I-96 so it couldn’t have been much of a hill!
LOL, wind resistance is a bitch.
I always loved the early iteration of those, Duetto? Not sure, but it was pre-camback, more of a teardrop taper to the rear instead of chopped with a spoiler. All of them were pretty, but these were beautiful.
