Time to stock up on light bulbs
The Washington Times ^ | November 26, 2011 | Editorial

Government ban on mercury-free fixtures takes effect Jan. 1

Within four weeks, it will be a crime to manufacture a 100-watt version of Thomas A. Edison’s brilliant invention. Thanks to a Democratic Congress and the signature of President George W. Bush in 2007, anti-industrial zealots at the Energy Department received authority to blot out one of the greatest achievements of the industrial age. They’re coming for our light bulbs.

Know-it-all bureaucrats insist that foisting millions of mercury-laden fluorescent tubes on the public is going to be good for the planet. The public obviously does not agree. Voting with their wallets, people have overwhelming favored warm, nontoxic lighting options over their pale curlicue imitators. Beginning Jan. 1, Obama administration extremists will impose massive financial penalties on any company daring to produce a lighting product that fully satisfies ordinary Americans.

The Republican House hasn’t done enough to stop this. Rep. Michael C. Burgess, Texas Republican, added language to the Energy and Water Appropriations bill to prohibit the ban’s implementation. A Senate committee deleted this sensible amendment in September, and it’s been quite a while since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has allowed an up-or-down vote on a funding bill.

Man FR keeps choaking on me. BTW, ain’t it wonderful to live in a country where you do not have a choice in the lightbulbs you buy, yet you can choose to kill your unborn baby? Soon you will not be able to choose your healthcare. As Yakoff Smirnoff said, “what a country!!!” Something is wrong here.

100 watt lightbulbs are valuable because they do emit heat. They can provide heat for animals and they can be used to keep water pipes from freezing.

It’s beyond frustrating to think that people can’t purchase what they need, as opposed to what the idiot politicians think is necessary to “save the planet”.

Just another way the ‘rats have to strip cash from our wallets. Florescents are expensive and it’s total BS that they last a long time. I fully stocked up on 100W incandescent bulbs earlier this year and I’m glad I did (thanks to FR for alerting me to the problem!).

I was looking to buy more 95 watt at Home Depot this weekend. None to be found. Only some new incandescent “72 watt- same as 100 watt” nonsense for extra dollars. Bastards.

I was helping a friend put in a dimmer switch for a new chandelier. All HD hadwas non-dimmable compact fluorescents. Seems the dimmable compact fluorescents go for $15, what a rip off. So he’s stocking up on ye good ol incandescents

Market them as a 100W heating element with this statement.

WARNING! It is a violation of Federal Law to use this 100 Watt heat element, formerly known as a 100 Watt light bulb, as a light bulb.

These are halogen capsules encased in a frosty bulb that looks like a normal incandescent. Because the halogen lamp burns at a hotter, more energy efficient temperature (and the encapsulated halogen gas slows the evaporation of the very hot filament), you get things like 100 watt brilliance at 72 watts, and 60 watt brilliance at 30 watts. But they are mongo expensive. Maybe someone will come up with a system where you can just replace the halogen capsule piece, and keep the outer shell and the base.

About a year ago, my husband and I cleared a Wal-Mart shelf of every light bulb they had in stock. About 2.5 cases. The cashier and other customers looked at me funny.

Glad I bought them.

A nation on LED lighting would be in the dark after an EMP attack, even with backup or hardened generation and distribution capacity. Tungsten filaments are unaffected by EMP.

We recently spent a week at Disney World. While sitting on the bed under a CFL light fixture, I was amazed at the amount of HEAT thrown off by that CFL! Which makes me wonder; since it requires ENERGY to produce HEAT; just how much MORE efficient ARE those CFLs....TRULY? When the COST of the CFL is considered; how much $$$ is REALLY saved by using them...not to even mention the ENVIRONMENTAL dangers they pose! Has it actually been tested, or is this just another scam that the US of A has swallowed, hook-line-and-sinker, without even verifying it first? That’s how we bought the AGW bullcrap story.....if we’re honest enough to admit it!
