LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Posted on 11/28/2011 12:32:23 PM PST by Fred

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

Your proposal is great except for the difficulty of finding enough truly honest and dedicated public servants. I would bet that if all legislators were vetted you could count on one hand the number of congresspersons, and I suspect some judges up through the SC, who could not pass a non compromised scrutiny.

Hey, just do a bit of a research on Newt and he is as much of a progressive thinker than any of those on the left. He is worse than Romney.

If the Kenyan gets re-elected, just looking from the point of view of not having one from the stage come in and undo the first phases of Obama Care, will lead to a super prolonged recession and loss of heaven knows how many more jobs, and loss of health care for many via. their current employer systems. Not to even mention things like the continued downgrade in US influences world wide. What will happen in the mid east, as they see how much they can get away with as the new Islamic parties take control in various countries, such as Libya and Egypt to name just a few.
Once Putin gets elected into the President position again, look out world. We already see how things are shaping up there. And Putin sees the current weak leadership in America. In short. Four more years of the Kenyan spell a real disaster in the making.

I actually sincerely hope that bachmann makes a comeback. I think she is brilliant. I can’t believe how smart she is on foreign policy. WOW! I would not mind her at all. Cain is still my first choice, Bachmann is my second and Sanotrum is my third. Perry has to do a complete redo to get traction again. I guess with 35 days he could. I don’t know. This primary is CRAZY!!!!!

I like Newt’s ‘21st century contract with america’

I liked his original Contract with America. However, once they were elected they did not even pass most of it. That is my main problem with Newt. He is a big talker, but has a problem with getting results.

"Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government"

Now that would be a big plus in my book. Shut it down!!

Clinton knows that Newt made him look good on policy and the economy - and Clinton still takes the undeserved credit.

I don’t know about that. Clinton just endorsed Newt yesterday. He really was talking very positive about the guy.

I cannot WAIT for the general election if ROmney is nominated to see how many of you supposed conservatives try flacking for that liberal sack of crap.

It’s going to be John McCain all over again.

Typo. MALE gender. But yes, it's a perfect trait for Perrybots to gloat about and pretend as if no other male has ever run for President. After all, they want to us to be in awe of the fact he's Christian.

Don't forget that Perry's wife claimed that Republicans and Democrats didn't like him because he was Christian. I still chuckle at that one. Then again, this is the same woman who said she's the reason that Rick is running.

Incredible as it seems, we seem to be down to two choices:
Newt or Mitt.

So... To paraphrase the title of this article, Let’s get real:

Which one will be less of a disaster for the Republican Party, Newt or Mitt?

Given that choice, my preference is Newt.

Third party is ONLY an alternative if we have a strong enough candidate to actually WIN. Otherwise a third party just gives Obama four more years to finish destroying our once great country.

If Mitt wins the nomination, You're sadly mistaken if you think a lot of us are going to continue supporting an increasingly liberal GOP. We did it in 2008, but no more. Maybe Conservatives are the true RINOs, in which case it's time to look elsewhere.

Romney would help usher in the destruction of this country just as surely as any liberal. It may take him longer, but make no mistake, he would be incredibly bad.

Why is it always North Eastern Blue Blood Elites (NEBBEs) telling us who is good and who is bad ???

I believe it is because the Northeast has always had Republicans. The South until fairly recent has been completely Democratic. I think the Southern Republicans could control the message, but don’t seem to either know how or don’t want to yet.

Come election day, it is popularity contest. Always has been.

The difference between today and 150 years ago is that today, communists have infiltrated our politics and are hell bent on our destruction. I

If Obama wins, he could cement the republics destruction. Pack the courts with more communists. Rape our Constitution even more frequently. As Chris Rock said, he would “go Gangsta” in a second term. I could imagine a complete meltdown of the economy in his second term.

Newt would probably be best as a VP. (I cant say who should be President, as I would risk getting zotted)

Back in the "RUN SARAH RUN" days, those of us who suggested that Palin could not command enough support to win the general election risked zotting, or at least major flamage from the zealots.

Now she's out of never was in the race, and all of a sudden we're supposed to panic over whether a candidate is "electable"??

Not buyin' it.

In some ways, he is right.

I don’t like Newt. Don’t trust him. But if it is between him and Rommney I will probably vote Newt.

But lets be honest. Neither is a good candidate.
