In August, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that health insurance plans, as of January 1, 2013, will be required to cover contraception, including FDA-approved emergency contraception. “These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need,” she said. The Catholic Church has been pushing the White House to allow Catholic hospitals to opt out of providing contraception that it considers the termination of a life, and many in the abortion rights community are worried that the president will grant that exemption. Additionally, many Democrats invested in President Obama’s re-election are worried that if he grants that exemption, he will alienate liberal women voters they will need come November.
“There’s a high level of concern,” a prominent Democrat with ties to the White House told ABC News...

Earlier this month, President Obama met with Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has been lobbying hard for an exemption, having called the requirement “an unprecedented attack on religious liberty.”

A bulletin the Bishops sent out criticizes the religious exemption in the rule as “so extremely narrow…it protects almost no one. It covers only a ‘religious employer’ that has the ‘inculcation of religious values’ as its purpose, primarily employs and serves persons who share its religious tenets, and is a church organization under two narrow provisions of the tax code.” Catholic colleges, universities, hospitals, and charitable organizations will not qualify, the Bishops say.
Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, told ABC News that her organization’s biggest concern is with the narrowing of the definition of “religious employer.”

There was a time when there really was an understanding in connection with separation of church and state. To me, allowing the hospitals to opt out is nothing more than following the laws on the books.
The EVIL in this country is palpable.
Absolutely and in direct opposition to the USCCB who confronted her about it to no avail.
She has no business complaining about anything now. When people like that diminish the power of the Church to root out evil, they cooperate in the wrongfulness of the act. The Church, Catholic physicians, and Catholic health care facilities need to be united in one voice on these matters and Sister Kathleen intentionally weakened that coalition.
The problem is that so many Catholic hospitals have been merged into partnerships with secular institutions and they often lose aspects of their Catholicity in the process.
But sister Kathleen got clear direction from the bishops and ignored it.
I’m missing something. How does a rule “that health insurance plans, as of January 1, 2013, will be required to cover contraception, including FDA-approved emergency contraception” effect HOSPITALS, which is what the rest of the article is about.
It seems a big step from saying “insurance must cover XXX” to “every hospital must provide XXX procedure”. After all there are many procedures that many hospitals can’t do. Open Heart Surgery, MRI’s, Cancer treatments, etc.
Is it only the morning after pill that she wants them to stock? Or do they have to do first trimester abortions?
I don’t get what gives her the right to order hospitals around.
I guess that the Catholic hospitals are employers who provide health insurance to their employees?
The argument is based on hospital or health care systems receiving government funding through Medicare and Medicaid. Government then claims that it cannot provide those funds if the full range of "services" are equally provided to all or, rather, that the funds are being used illegally if those services are denied.
As far as the question concerning hospitals is concerned, "emergency contraceptive services", such as the morning after pill, an abortifacient, are generally provided in emergency rooms which are usually located in hospitals.
Keep in mind that the pro-aborts have redefined “pregnancy” so that it does not begin until implantation. Any abortion before implantation, in their view, is “contraception.”
In Orwellian fashion, they’ve succeeded with their manipulation of the language so that for a lot of people today, “contraception” means something very different than it used to. I’d not be surprised if this new (lying) definition of “contraception” is not presupposed in the HHS regs.
Instead, we have church "leaders" who are quietly begging for exemptions, thus ceding to the state that the state has power and authority in this matter.

That is a great post. Whether it be abortion, homosexuality or any other evil and deviant behavior.
I believe that the official stance is that it’s illegal due to Federal Law to force any medical student or resident to perform abortion. However, there are pressures.
I’ve been out for 20 years, but I hear stories about would be 0b/Gyns who can’t get a residency slot because they’re prolife. There’s at least one New York Family Practice residency program that offers a “fellowship” - extra training after finishing residency - in “reproductive medicine. Essentially, they run an abortion clinic.
Prolife faculty members have told me they make a point of mentoring students. There’s the American Association of Prolife OB/Gyns http://www.aaplog.org/ and the Christian Medical Association http://www.cmda.org/wcm/

Important article and many excellent and informative comments on the thread. The leftists want to force everyone to participate in their immorality. Reminds me of war crimes I've read about; Pol Pot would force family members under threat of tortureto kill other family members, other examples as well. This bill (and others) are a form of war crimes.

The federal government has absolutely no business in the health insurance industry, whether by morality or constitutionally based.
All the Protestant faith base hospitals should join in on this one. Keep the pressures on the killers of tiny babies.
