That would be nice.
Gee it hasn’t happened in a long time. I think the convo went into without the nominee being a certainty was 1968 rats. And even then HHH was pretty much a lock.
It was more fun back when the rats required a 2/3 majority.
with filing deadlines later for late primaries in March-April ... must be a few folks wondering why they did not get in now that MITT is in MELTdown.
If Dole dropped out in ‘96, Kemp would have gotten into the late primaries. The example to study in the DEM ‘76 race when Church and Jerry Brown got in late and chased Jimmy Carter around the late primaries, beating up on him. It was not clear that Carter was going to make it.
“That would be nice.”
One can dream. OTOH, the “party elite” would probably draft Milt.
I’ll take Newt over Milt anyday of the week and thrice on Sunday.
I remember watching the 1980 Republican National Convention, so I know that, when the convention started, we didn’t know that Reagan would be the nominee. When the convention started, he had more delegates than any other candidate, but he didn’t have a majority of them.
I hope that when the 2012 Republican National Convention starts, we won’t know who the nominee will be. If that happens, the convention will be more suspenseful and exciting, causing more people to watch and hear the good republican ideas. That happened in 1980, and Reagan won about 40 states.
