Bret Baier: Romney complained after our interview that my questions were “uncalled for”

Via the Right Scoop, I encourage you to watch the interview if you missed it last night or read the transcript. Here’s the sort of “uncalled for,” out-of-left-field word grenade that Bret Baier was lobbing at poor defenseless Mitt Romney:

BAIER: About your book, you talk about Massachusetts healthcare. We’ve heard you many times, in the debates and interviews, talk about how it is different in your mind than the president’s healthcare law, Obamacare. The question is, do you still support the idea of a mandate? Do you believe that that was the right thing for Massachusetts? Do you think a mandate, mandating people to buy insurance is the right tool?

Romney’s reply: “Bret, I don’t know how many hundred times I’ve said this, too. This is an unusual interview.” Actually, if there’s any criticism to be made of Baier’s questioning, I think that’s it — not that the questions were “uncalled for” but that they were a little too called for because they cut right to the heart of conservatives’ concerns about Romney. He’s been asked this stuff a thousand times on the trail. But the repetition is inevitable and even necessary when he’s stuck at 25 percent in the polls with Iowa 34 days away. There’s a reason for that, and Baier’s giving him a chance to address it. Another example:

The few times - and I mean few - that I've seen anybody taking a swipe at Romney, Romney bristled/got testy. Remember the spat between Romney and Perry? Remember how testy Romney got and how he tried to shut down Perry before Perry could mouth anything that didn't conform to Romney's desired message? Remember Romney admonishing opponents that they had there 60 seconds and now it's his turn to respond - rudely talking over them in the process? He's used to getting his free pass and doesn't like it when somebody doesn't play by this rule.

In my view, in the times it got confrontational, Romney may have scored technical points or successfully silenced the opposition (by talking over them/not allowing the talk), but he came off looking bad in the process.

It will be interesting to see more opponents/moderators press Romney. Will he be able to maintain his cool above the fray manner? Or will we see more of Nasty Mitt - particularly if Gingrich gives him a real run for the money and Mitt gets more desperate?

Reminds me of Baeir’s interview with Obama. Romney cannot get the nomination.

How can he survive a Presidential race if Brett’s very fair interview is too grueling for him. The regular MSM will eat him up and spit him out.

“Reminds me of Baeir’s interview with Obama. Romney cannot get the nomination.”

He won’t.

Romney was extremely uncomfortable, defensive and a bit petulant in the Bret Baier interview.

Willard is a phony and a fraud, incapable of beating Obama.

Romney had his famous “smile” on the whole time. You know the one, like “I hate that I’m talking to you right now but I have to look presidential but if I didn’t have to I would throw you through the glass of my used car lot”.

O’Reilly was insufferable tonight! His butting in on the man in the room, Bret Baier, was outrageous and much of the details were missed because of it. Baier had plenty to say but could not seem to get started before butt breath HAD to ruminate about how cool HE would have been, were he in Bret’s shoes, and used up Bret’s vital time bloviating about his advice for Romney, on how Romney SHOULD have answered the question. I am to the point that O’Reilly can be viewed only when absolutely necessary but never habitually. One would commit chop suey.

Did you notice how Romney shifted uncomfortably in his chair? It’s a wonder a chair leg didn’t break off. Romney was furious we now know. Very telling. The guy has been a jerk if the measure of disdain he garners from every 2008 candidate means anything. I believe we saw why he is held in such low esteem, in the Romney/Baier interview.

Willard is getting testy because Newt is flying past him with almost no money on the power of his ideas.

Time to grow a pair, Romney.

We already have a President who only plays softball. We don’t need another crybaby who can’t handle criticism or moderately difficult questions.

Stand up for what you believe, be consistent and tell the truth. Or take a hike.

He was radio interviewed by Hannity and was a staunch defender of our “Progressive” tax system. Hannity tried a tad to pin him down and he squirmed like the political worm he is. If he is nominated he will be the MSM and DNC choice because they will instantly pounce on him for the liar he is and they will not do so with their chosen boy wonder.
Romney cannot be our choice.

I posted yesterday that I thought Romney was going to have some mental issues as he sees for the second time in 3 and a half years what he assumed was his time to be nominated yanked away from him.. it must be frustrating for him to spend a good part of a decade running for President where all the press and pundits say you are “the man”, you kick butt in the debates and still you are stuck with 3/4 of the Republicans not wanting you as (baggage laden campaign left for dead 6 weeks ago) Newtie blows by you without a wave...the peeling is coming off the core

Uh Oh, Brett didn’t get the memo? Doesn’t he know that Mitt is the media candidate and deserves softball questions?
