Kentucky church bans interracial marriage

A small Kentucky church has chosen to ban marriages and even some worship services for interracial couples. The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, located in Pike County, made the vote in response to a longtime member who is engaged to a man whose birthplace is in Zimbabwe.

Other pastoral leaders in the area were quick to denounce the church's vote. "It's not the spirit of the community in any way, shape or form," Randy Johnson, president of the Pike County Ministerial Association, told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The small congregation, which usually hosts about 40 members each Sunday, held the vote after longtime member Stella Harville, brought her fiancé Ticha Chikuni to church with her in June. The couple performed a song together at the church in which Chikuni sang "I Surrender All," while Harville played the piano.

I think the church’s decison should be proteced under the 1st Amendment.

With that said, I hope the couple in question waste no time in finding a more suitable place to worship.

This story is news precisely because it happens so seldom. 40 attendees on a Sunday. Hmmm. The Rising Tide of Racism in America.

This sounds about as racist as black social workers refusing to place black children with white families for adoptions.

It would have been entertaining to watch the audience during that song!

"It sure ain't Christian," Dean Harville said. "It ain't nothing but the old devil working."

Well said, sir.

I agree with you. I would also add that one can find racism wherever there are ignorance and fear....in all countries.

The media gives Muhammed Ali (Cassius Clay) a pass when he speaks out against interracial marriage. Let this rural church have its opinion too. Let it stand for what is left of its culture and be politically incorrect. If the mixed couple wants a place where they “fit in” then there are plenty of places they can go.

If either of them has this as a religious belief...so be it.

I think my post demonstrated my agreement with this.

I will simply pray for their eyes to be opened to the truth.

Well, of course inter-species marriage is not acceptable.

Oh, they’re not meaning “species” when they use the term “race”? Ah.

The thing is, there is only one “race” among humanity — homo sapiens. And humans are free to marry other humans of the opposite sex, regardless of ethnic or cultural heritage.

This story is news because Yahoo is full of crapola like this. I use Yahoo for email but changed it from my homepage long ago because of their stupid slant on news and sports. I mean, really? A congregation of 40 people? Yahoo will stretch stories to make people of faith, conservatives, etc look evil. In between, they are compelled to throw in a Kardashian story.

Unfortunate and not uncommon among many racial and ethnic groupings. Among my own, I'm referred to as “the Gringo of the family.” My father, (Swedish protestant) was not allowed to be married to my mother (Spanish Catholic) in the main chapel of the local Catholic church. A smaller side chapel (for gringo “almost” Catholics) was used instead. Married 36 years, and every time that wedding was called to mind, he'd get upset about it all over again.

Meanwhile in any and every local mosque, murder is a matter of honor...and it gets worse from there.

If looks far enough, you can probably find a majority of roughly 40 people who would vote for almost anything.

This isn’t news; it is a political hit.

What is fun is to confront a church like this with the account of Moses being criticized by his sister Miriam for marrying a black women. God responded by afflicting Miriam with leprosy for a spell.

There are some splinter group churches many calling themselves Baptist that just makes you wonder who’s side are they really on. One in my neck of the woods displays a sign board that always has something provocative on it, like, “If you don’t know Jesus, Go to Hell”. Yea, that really makes me want to drop by and join them for Sunday service.

Rednecks being rednecks isn't really news. I'm still surprised that even a bunch of dumb hicks would feel so strongly against interracial marriage as to invite international scorn that this is bound to bring upon their little worthless congregation.

Enjoy the bloodbath idiots.

Exactly. This church should be able to ban any marriage for any reason, even if the reason is bigoted. Similarly, if some church wants to allow gay marriage, let them. In either case, we can show our displeasure by not attending or supporting it.
