Remember when conservative columnist George Will called Mitt Romney a “recidivist reviser of his principles”? As it happens, the veteran pundit has nothing nicer to say about Newt Gingrich, whose astounding sudden popularity in the polls recently prompted the candidate himself to say he’ll be the 2012 GOP nominee.

As for the deficit reduction, this was a combination of effects put in motion by George H.W. Bush's fiscal responsibility, a Reagan House (which not all due to Gingrich, by any means) and, mostly, the longest, biggest economic boom in the post-war history -- which had nothing to do with either Gingrich or Clinton.
She wasn’t in a cancer ward. She had a tumor removed that was benign. And he didn’t serve her papers there, he brought his kids by to visit and got into an argument. They had already told the kids they were getting divorced before she went into the hospitial. Please learn the facts before you repeat Democrat talking points.
The biggest risk about Newt in the general is that he regularly manages to tick off (and demoralize) conservatives (although, so far, many seem willing to give him a pass on anything that occurs) and at the same time he’s deeply hated by the many rank-and-file Dems.
Did you hear Newt’s buddy Al Sharpton today? Gingrich actually went on an “Eductation Tour” with Al Sharpton in 2009 to promote Obama’s policies. Today Sharpton was blasting Gingrich as “heartless” and “always blaming the poor kids.” So, Newt ticked off conservatives with that stunt and what did he even get for it? As predicted, nada.
Anyone who was politically sentient during the ‘90’s has a pretty well-formed opinion on Newt. For many Dems, the effect on them of having Newt nominated for President would be like the effect it would have on the GOP base is Nancy Pelosi were nominated for President. There would be crawling over broken glass en masse to vote against him/her.
It’s a voter intensity thing and it’s hard to say how it would play out.

What about the adolescent lament “well he supports x, therefore I will never vote for him!”. Personally Newt is my second choice (after Perry), but I will vote for ANY of the Republicans over BHO, including, God forbid, Romney or Paul.
Yes, I agree with you on the “I’ll NEVER vote for him” thing.
I also will vote for the nominee, but it won’t be because “no one is perfect.” And in the meantime, I’d like to see which candidate’s imperfections can be managed with the least amount of risk to the nation, hence the various discussions.
Can’t remember who said it — Steyn brought it up last week — but the idea is it’s better to make the wrong person do the right thing than to sit around interminably waiting to find the right person to do the right thing!
Good analysis. I hadn’t thought about how Newt would impact the Rats. He’s not my first choice, but if he’s the nominee I’ll vote for him. I think he can overcome the negatives, but as your analysis points out it’s not a slam dunk.
Will’s one of the alleged GOP elite, that makes him a shiitehead in my book.
We’ll just have to see how this rolls out. In the meantime, I’m giving some of the other candidates a second look.
I actually started the primary season inclined toward Newt. I’d heard him on Hannity so many times over the last years, I assumed he had changed and stablized. Now, going down Memory Lane with him, I’m not so sure.
Like a caller to Rush said, Newt is like the bad boyfriend you broke up with over and over. Then, after he’s been gone a decade or so, one day he shows up with flowers and candy and you think, okay, he’s changed and charming. And you take him back.
The problem is what often happens next is you find out he’s still cheating on you with the Democrats and you think, WHAT THE CRAPPOLA WAS I THINKING??
I think after SC & FL we will have a good idea who the alternative to Romney is and then we have to figure out if they are really a conservative.

I didn’t say he lied. I said he was irrelevant and mentally challenged.
He received private servicing from Callista, his professional subordinate, while still married to his second wife.

The man leaves me with the same taste in the back of my throat as did Nixon and Clinton.
And, unlike most Freepers, I got a chance to briefly meet Nixon (and Johnson), as a young lad, and they both made me think of stagnant swamp water and that misty stink that rises above landfills. Gingrich is more of the same.
Fact is, the Big Money has chosen to fill the boobs’ television sets with pictures of the Black Messiah until 2016. Nothing anyone can do will change this.
I read Will’s latest column in NRO. It drips with contempt for Newt. THe hatred is vampid. I’m not sure why, but clearly it runs deep.
Newt is Newt. We know this, but to say he is Marxist, a phony etc. undermines Will’s commentary.
He seems to hate Romney too. HIs wife works for Perry.
At this point, I don’t see how the country under any circumstance will vote for Obama. The man has no ideas. The vast majority of Americans are smarter than Obama and know it.
I put my hat in for Newt four weeks ago, and still have no remorse.

Here we go again. Why not check out your facts. This is not what happened, but then again if this is your criteria then Romney must be your man.
