Herman Cain drops out of presidential race
LA times ^ | 3 Dec 2011

Posted on 12/03/2011 11:02:40 AM PST by mandaladon

Herman Cain, the insurgent populist whose candidacy has been ensnared by allegations of sexual impropriety, said Saturday that he is leaving the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying that the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign."

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said at an event in Atlanta. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."

Cain's campaign had sent mixed signals as to his future since Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who claims to have had an affair with Cain for more than a decade, went public with her story earlier this week. While Cain has said he has been "reassessing" his candidacy, he also, at times, has been fiercely defiant, suggesting that unnamed enemies have been trying to do him in and vowing to press forward.

"The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out and go away," he said. "I am not going to be silenced, and I am not going away."

"...when will we stop allowing the media to pick our candidate for us"

This development leaves only one "small government" candidate left for me to focus on right now; Michelle Bachmann. Rick Santorum and possibly Rick Perry are fall-backs for me after her.

Newt Gingrich might have "BIG ideas", but he would need a BIG government in DC to implement them. I don't trust him. I do trust Bachmann.

But Newt doesn't have to be clever with Obama. It's like a History professor debating a kindergarten kid....the first week of school.

It would definitely be worth the price of admission.

If only we had a great debater with a good life to back it up. What does it take to find another Reagan?

Unfortunately, I second your opinion.

We need that financial gal, Ann Barnheart or something like that. She was threatened by the Islam freaks a while back. She doesn’t back down.

Obama might as well own what’s coming. When Obamacare destroys the economy, etc.

History is written by the victors.

If this covert muslim single handedly brings down "The Great Satan", his praises will be sung in mosques for millennia.

What better write-up, how much more glory could any human hope for?

Newt better do a better job debating Obama, than he did with his debate with Kerry.

It is sad! This is why we can’t get good candidates to run. The left wing smear machine!

Cain's ideas were the most conservative of anyone who was in the race.

I don't agree with that. I think Newt Gingrich has the best conservative ideas in the race. Unfortunately, he has a record to run on, and he hasn't always lived up to his ideals. And for all we know, Cain, a complete unknown, wouldn't either.

I am sickened by what people have done to Mr. Cain. I don’t even have words to express how heartbroken I am over this.

Prayers for Mr. Cain and his family... they didn’t deserve to be treated this way.

As for the segment of “conservatives” who used these BS allegations to trash this man’s moral character, but at the same time are supporting Newt - you should all be completely ashamed of yourselves...

F it...

At this point I have absolutely NO-ONE I would support in this upcoming election. If Hillary runs, I’m voting for her because I’d rather be able to blame the democrat socialists for the destruction of our country than have someone claiming to be a conservative do the same...

Thank You! Someone had to say what you did. These FReepers had better snap out of it and fast. No one said this was going to be easy, and it hasn’t been. The Nation is at stake and we all had better come to terms with that. Lock and load, get prepared and now on to the next phase in the campaign. We have a Supreme Ct. to uphold, we have a military to support, we have an economy that will take years to fix. Stop whining about not voting or throwing in the towel. Get back on track. Cain would be embarrassed if he heard all of this crap. Snap outa’ it!

Thank you, I heard the same thing, Many I, I, I’s in that speech. PTL it is over. I am reminded of Richard Nixon in this, after he resigned, the country rejoiced in that the National Nightmare was finally over, the drip, drip, drip was agonizing. Cain bowed out and I am thankful.

Whatever is the situation.

This is a Republic - we cannot demand candidates run. We have to compare those who do offer themselves for mortal combat vs. those whose ‘turn it is’ by Party fiat.

Newt’s marital journey began in his teens (16) I can cut him some slack on that.

My family is replete with flawed human beings. I live in the real world and expect that politicians are people from the real world.

Several of the most intelligent, accomplished and successful people I have worked for/with or known had multiple marriages following affairs. Not pretty - but common.

I have never met a perfect person and don’t expect I ever will.

Whatever.

Thou shall not pass false witness against thy neighbor.

That seems to be their favorite sin.

Perry is still the one that is 100% pro gun. 100% pro life, Christian. No accusations of sexual trysts. Many let the media distort the facts about him so they could bash him.Or read into his comments what they wanted to hear,so they could bash him. I have no doubt that Herman Cain would have a made a decent president as well. However, that is not to be, so folks need to regroup and get behind whoever they feel is the best choice now. The main objective being to BEAT OBAMA.

The only thing that is a fact is that he knew her and gave her money. Where’s your proof? I’d sure hate to have the likes of you on a jury. Your verdict of guilty without evidence is appalling!

Sad, and this was purely manufactured.

This wouldn’t have happened to a white
conservative or a black liberal.

Racism is alive and well in American liberalism.

The other problem is that Conservatives in general, disdain government, and want nothing to do with having political office.

To liberals, government is the be all, end all, of life on this planet.
