Newt Gingrich will be the Republican nominee for president. Why? Because Mitt Romney is a Mormon, and the GOP primary/caucus schedule favors a non-Mormon candidate.
White Evangelical Christians are perhaps the strongest, most loyal constituency of the Republican Party. That is Romneys greatest obstacle to the nomination. In a Pew poll conducted just before Thanksgiving, two-thirds of Evangelical Christians expressed the belief that Mormonism is not a Christian religion. In other polls, a significant majority of Evangelicals consistently express doubts that they would vote for a non-Christian for president.
Romney = Mormon = non-Christian
That same Pew poll, conducted shortly before Herman Cains implosion, showed the pizza godfather leading nationally among Evangelical Republicans at 26%. Newt Gingrich came next at 19%, followed by Romney with just 17%. Now that Cain is out of the race, his supporters must choose a new candidate. Many will move to second tier candidates like Michele Bachmann or Ron Paul. One can surmise, however, that a large percentage will select one of the two current front-runners. The Pew poll strongly suggests Gingrich will get far more former Cain supporters than Romney.

Go Gingrich!
For me, it’s not because Mitt is a Mormon, it’s because he’s a RINO. He looks like on Obama clone.
to the staff of “Open Salon”:
Please STFU and get a clue.
Romney doesn’t need you writing his Epstein notes for his religion and his faith has absolutely nothing to do with conservative opposition to this opportunistic political Hag.
That’s Hag, as in ugly azz hack.
We object to his Oklahoma weathervane positions on damn near any issue.
Dude is a snake oil salesman and will say anything to get “what he wants”.
Eff him and you too....
Have a nice day...
SPOT ON !!!
I think the premise of the article implies Romney can’t win because
Republicans are anti Mormon bigots. Romney can’t win because of his record and his positions. Harrumph.
You have to give Newt credit for a fine display of masterful political skill.
If he can do this great a job of rebuilding his image, think about how fantastic of a job he will do repairing the USA. Talk about the ability to analyze a problem and then work it till it’s right!
Newt is a fighter and not an Ivy League snob. I am tired of Harvard and Yale elitests who look down their noses on everyone else. Look how these Ivy Leaguers have screwed up the country!!!
Go Newt.
I wonder how many of these anti-Mormons know about Newt’s conversion to Catholicism.
I could easily vote for Newt. I will not vote from Romney.
Should Newt win, and I think he will, he will lay waste to the executive establishment.
I have always known for 100% certain that Romney would never be the nominee and exactly how he would lose (as this article lays out) I have just not known who emerge as the conservative alternative.
But Newt has emerged the winner of the anti-romney and I will gladly support him over Romney.
He’s going to lose. The GOP played their last card with McCain and this time I don’t see myself choking back my bile to vote for the one man worse than McCain.
You may proceed to call me an Obama voter now. I really don’t care.

Good article, but I don’t think the Mormon issue has much to do with it.
Agreed.
I’d be perfectly fine with any patriotic conservative (even if flawed as Gingrich and the others are) even if they were Jewish, Evangelical, Catholic, whatever.
I’d even be OK with an Agnostic, but an Athiest might bother me a bit.
The only one I’d really get nervous about is, naturally, a Muslim.
For me it does.
It’s not that Mitt is mormon, it’s MUCH more that his is Moron.
