Canada out of Kyoto round 2

OTTAWA - Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent has confirmed Canada will not be part of a second Kyoto Protocol to fight climate change.

"We believe that ultimately a new agreement that includes all of the world's major emitters (of greenhouse gases) in both the developing and the developed world is the only way to materially reduce annual mega-tonnage to the point we can work to prevent global warming hitting or exceeding two degrees," Kent said from the climate conference in Durban, South Africa.

So, when the Kyoto Protocol, which Canada signed in 1997, expires in 2012 Canada's participation in the agreement will also expire.

The Conservatives have long criticized the Kyoto Protocol for not requiring countries with far higher carbon dioxide emissions, such as China, India, and Brazil, to join the fight against global warming.

Japan and Russia have also announced they will not be taking part in negotiations to develop a new Kyoto extension from 2013 to 2017.

Kent added that Canada would continue to pursue a modest target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17% from 2005 levels by 2020.

Meanwhile, the minister also announced that Canada would increase its funding to $600 million per year for the next two years to help developing economies adapt to global warming in the future.

"We're already addressing challenges in deforestation and forest degradation," Kent said. "We're also ensuring food security and adaptation assistance."

Canada's funding for global warming adaptation in poorer countries was $400 million in 2011.

Sadly, we have passed to the point of no return.

It’s too late. We have emitted far too much bad gas into the atmosphere that nothing is going to matter anymore.

So really there is no point in continuing any of these discussions.....

Chretien’s Liberal government signed Kyoto, with no intention of actually complying with it. The idea was to look good at the time. Harper's Conservative government promises less, because it actually means what it promises.

I suppose it might interfere with their feel-good, greenie consciences, but why would Canadians object to having things a couple of degrees warmer? It’s not as if Canada is exactly boiling hot.

Canada is in he driver's seat when it comes to global warming.

Either global warming is bunk and pulling out of Kyoto will save them billions, or global warming is true and they become the world's breadbasket.

Canada’s press release should have read something like “... Even if Global Warming is real, Canada’s climate would be greatly improved...”

Alrighty then; you folks in the Dominion should start to worry about uncontrolled illegal immigration problem about to arise across your southern border. Sadly, yours is the only sane government left in North America.

Will Canada get back the banned CFC asthma inhalers - the ones that actually work?
