Iowa: Newt Leads, Then Mitt, Then Ron Paul (Newt loves subsidies -- Perry says NO)

...UPDATE: Hey, remember when this was the year that the Republican field was going to break away from pandering on ethanol? Remember how this year was going to be the year that fury over runaway spending was going to overtake the usual pandering to primary state constituencies?

Yeah, not so much. Recall from January of this year:

The former Speaker blew through Des Moines last Tuesday for the Renewable Fuels Association summit, and his keynote speech to the ethanol lobby was as pious a tribute to the fuel made from corn and tax dollars as we’ve ever heard. Mr. Gingrich explained that “the big-city attacks” on ethanol subsidies are really attempts to deny prosperity to rural America, adding that “Obviously big urban newspapers want to kill it because it’s working, and you wonder, ‘What are their values?’”

August 27, 2011: Perry wants a “level playing field” & an end to ethanol mandate (audio)

......"“We don’t need to have government picking winners and losers in this business,” Perry said during a news conference in Des Moines. “Let the folks get out there with the regulations off their back. I have a good idea that the farmers in Iowa can compete with anybody in the world.”.......

Rick Perry on subsidies in Energy Policy linked below:

Perry: As part of a broader tax reform strategy, I will also ask Congress to eliminate direct subsidies and tax credits that distort the energy marketplace. My plan levels the playing field, ending Obama’s anti-growth policies and opening a competitive marketplace to benefit American citizens.

Perry: We favor an “all of the above” strategy to increase America’s energy security that promotes greater efficiency and conservation while utilizing all our natural resources – conventional and renewable, including on-shore and offshore oil, gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, biomass and waste to energy. We can and should continue to pursue renewable sources of energy, not through vast federal subsidies that raise energy prices for all Americans, but through free market competition. A responsible energy policy gives states the freedom to properly conserve and protect the environment, even while meeting the needs of citizens and allowing for the expansion of industry. With advances in technology, the idea that expanded energy production is in conflict with a cleaner environment is simply false. Energy production can and must occur hand-in-hand with responsible environmental stewardship.

Perry:Current federal energy policy undermines free market principles. The assortment of cash payments, loan guarantees, and tax preferences has inserted politics and the will of federal bureaucrats into decisions that can and should be handled by private markets. Our federal energy policy will focus on removing market distortions created by federal mandates and incentives. Politicians and bureaucrats remain poor substitutes for the market in developing, allocating, and consuming resources. This complex web of federal energy incentives perfectly characterizes the philosophy of the current administration – that the judgment of the government is superior to the judgment of the private market. The federal government should level the playing field for all energy industries by eliminating subsidies and mandates that punish consumers and skew the energy marketplace. American taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize certain energy companies, buy certain forms of energy, or shoulder the cost of funding billions of dollars in subsidies and loan guarantees for inefficient and uncompetitive green energy programs.

We believe that as a precursor to comprehensive tax reform (moving towards a flatter corporate tax code), we must eliminate as many specific subsidies and tax credits as possible. Under a Perry administration, no new specific tax incentives will be issued for energy development, eliminating government sponsorship for certain types of energy. In order to allow emerging energy sources to reevaluate and reorient their business model towards a more competitive environment, existing specific tax incentives would not be eliminated immediately, but instead would be allowed to expire when they come up for renewal.

Perry:

1. Eliminate subsidies and mandates that punish consumers and skew the energy marketplace, leveling the playing field for all energy industries.

2. Eliminate as many issue-specific subsidies and tax credits as possible.

3. Do not issue new specific tax incentives for energy development.

4. Allow existing specific tax incentives to expire as scheduled.

5. Industry-wide tax incentives for research and development will remain in place under comprehensive tax reform.

“I think you have an agency which would get up every morning, very much like the National Institutes for Health or the National Science Foundation, and try to figure out what do we need to do today to get a better environment that also gets us a better economy,”

Newt told the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association as he explained his desire to eliminate the EPA and replace it with an Environmental Solutions Agency. (Big government solution)

Gov. Perry wants to give the states' individual environmental agencies the power -- and have a skeleton D.C. forum to allow for mediation between states.

Meanwhile in Texas.....

"Another new measure made tightening air quality permits on the oil and gas industry more difficult. That law, which Perry signed in June, requires the Texas environmental agency to analyze the effect of new regulation on the economy - including how it might hurt a company - before implementation. The economic impact could override the environmental benefit of the new regulation. The new law reflects Perry's contention that global warming is a questionable theory and that regulation always creates an adverse business climate." Perry Slashed Environmental Enforcement in Texas

Why Rick Perry’s Energy Plan Might be a Game-Changer “Bryan Preston -October 14, 2011

The United States of America is in a bad way fiscally. The US Treasury reports:

that the U.S. deficit for the fiscal year ended September 30 is $1.29 trillion, the second largest in history (after 2009).

The national debt is $14.8 trillion. Our GDP is $14.9 trillion.

The financial crisis of 2008 reached critical mass almost precisely three years ago. And in Washington, the band plays on.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The band in Washington isn’t really playing on; they took their hands off their musical instruments and put them around the country’s economic throat years ago. We are by talent and resources among the richest nations on earth, and by our political freedoms, far and away the greatest. But for going on 30 years now, while we have spent more money that we take in, we have chosen to put much of our natural wealth off limits. That choice has led in direct and indirect ways to the straits we find ourselves in now, at the mercy of some of the world’s worst actors to fuel our economy, and on the precipice of bankruptcy. The current president has taken just about every negative fiscal trend and choice and accelerated them. The best line about Obama is simple: He made it all worse. He has made it harder for us to exploit our natural wealth, by making more of it off-limits and by using regulations to make it either too difficult or even illegal to tap. Whether he believes he had noble reasons or not is irrelevant; the effect of Obama’s actions is that everything is more expensive, jobs are more scarce and America is less secure.

In his energy plan, Perry shows that he understands all of this, and will fix the problem.”…………………

Rick Perry’s Air War (with the EPA) “…..Texas alone opted for the unfriendly approach. It’s the only state that did not issue a plan for compliance—and Perry has made it clear that Texas has no intention of complying. The move was a blatant slap to the Obama administration—and once again gave Perry the national spotlight. Defying the climate rules offered him the perfect opportunity to loudly decry the science of global warming—which in his book Fed Up! he calls a “contrived phony mess that is falling apart under its own weight”—and to slam EPA as a “rogue agency” with an “activist mind-set” that has “targeted Texas.” Such rhetoric is viral catnip to the tea party voters who could help catapult Perry to the 2012 presidential nomination…”

Newt said that??

He needs to blow up now, in December/January instead of next summer or fall.

When Perry finally withdraws, will your constant trashing of whomever remains have convinced you that the only “principled” pathway left for you will be to sit on your hands and “send the GOP a message”?

He’s repeatedly stated his desire to create a new Environmental Solutions Agency. Most recently he said it during the Huckabee forum.

People here know I’m no fan of Rick Perry but I’m even less of a fan of Newt Gingrich.

Alas, Gingrich is just Romney with personality. I will concentrate on local elections next November. Whatever these guys say now will be gone with the wind before the Inauguration. Cain and Palin are the only ones who might have maintained an intelligent conservative agenda past the elections. The rest of them are just Politicians and that means practical Leftists like Nixon and the Bushes.

Newt knows how to get elected. It’s not by going into Iowa and pissing everybody there off. That’s the sorry fact. It’s also why I believe that IA and NH should not lead off the primaries. But that’s another argument.

The way to end Ethanol is in the congress, period. Newt would never veto a bill that phases out those subsidies. Let him pander to IA.

Nobody hates deathanol more than I do. I participate in puregas.org and drive way out of my way to purchase clean fuel 50 gallons at a time in jugs.

CW

I don’t agree, and have posted that to you in the past, with your whitewashing of Perry’s past, however, I am real tired of Freepers like Redleg Duke lying about posters “trashing” candidates when all they are doing is pointing out their actual positions on issues using their own words.

Redleg, if there is something non-factual in what CW posted, then prove it, but otherwise, please knock off the spin of accusing people of “Trashing” a candidate when it is that own candidate’s words and positions on the issues that is trashing the candidate.

Contrary to what they tell you about the virtues of ethanol. Your engine will run, however your fuel mileage will drop. Your tank and fuel injectors will rust up and you will be out some big bucks to fix them. There is no outboard or motorcycle engine made to run on this crap. I spend about $30 a month adding “Seaform” and Lucas ethanol remover (actually neutralizer). Tell Newt to blow his ethanol out his ass.

I thank you for your kind words however, I can not abide the poison pill you inserted into your post.

I don’t agree, and have posted that to you in the past, with your whitewashing of Perry’s past,....

I try not to whitewash anything. Explain if you will.

How you can take my opinion about what others are doing and accuse me of "lying" is rediculous.

In other words, anyone who doesn't toe your line is a liar, eh?

Why don't you clean up that cesspool of a state of yours and stop with the bogus accusations about others.

Wow, just like Newt, adroit at dodging the real issue/point.

YOU accused others of "Trashing" Newt when all they did was present Newt's own issue positions and words on the subject at hand in context.

I'm not sure what you call that, but I call it lying.

I want to win. I want Newt or Mitt or the Ricks to win. I know that they will not be socialists like so many in the Pub Purity Ward write and conspire. They will cut spending, taxes and regs. Nobody has destroyed America like Obama. No one except Carter, perhaps Wilson but no one like Obama. He must be defeated. We all know in our heads and hearts, Paul, the Hunt, Michelle and probably the Ricks will not. Newt and perhaps Mitt might. That is good enough for me. I am not going to stay at home or cry. I want the Dems defeated.
