Roger Clemens, 48, is charged with lying to Congress when he emphatically denied accusations by a former trainer who told House investigators and members of Congress that he personally injected the pitching great with illegal steroids and human growth hormone, all banned by Major League Baseball.
In all, Clemens is charged with six criminal counts, including obstruction of Congress.
If convicted, Clemens faces the permanent stain of a felony record and up to 21 months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines.
